Swapping in a Used HDD Into a New Laptop

I have a broken Sony Viao that I never got to fixing. I was wondering if it were possible to swap the hard drive in the Viao into my new laptop and still keep the info in the hard drive.

not really,

Each laptop will have a different model of motherboard, different hardware, different drivers etc etc. You could do it, but expect either BSOD or loads of errors on boot up.

If you slap it into an external enclosure you could pull the data off of it onto your new lappy.

My laptop has space for two HDDs one of them is currently empty. Even if I put the old hard drive into the extra slot it wouldn't work?
You could put it in the extra slot and not boot off it, the data would be accessible it won't be booting your old OS.

Ah that's a different kettle of fish, yes, if you put it in and set your primary drive with your boot sequence you'll be ok.

Sweet! Looks like I don't need to pay Sony $300 to repair a laptop that's probably worth about the same price haha.

So how do I make sure my OS doesn't boot off of the second HDD?
If you leave it alone it shouldn't, its probably already set to boot off your current boot drive, so don't move that one. The setting is in the BIOS though.
