Should I use these sticks together?

Thread Starter
I have 2x2gb kingston KHX1600C9D3K2/4GX sticks running at 1333 as they were not stable at 1600 (I think... it was a while ago and I think I did not want to increase the voltage). I am a bit of a newbie and I do not understand these things as well as I should before playing with them. Possibly relevant stuff- I have a 965 @ 3.792ghz (205x18.5), gigabyte ga-790xta-ud4, has been great for ages. Anyway I decided to add in another 4gb as it supposedly can improve draw in distance in some games.

The shop said they could match it and sent me KHX1600c9d3b1k2 (2x2gb). Are these suitable to use together ie all 4x2gb sticks.
http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/K...C9D3K2_4GX.pdf
http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/K...D3B1K2_4GX.pdf
The manuals appear identical apart from the model number and the look. Will there be any problems? Thanks for any help.

Edit- on closer look the power usage is different 1.080w vs 1.800w between them both. Will this cause problems?

Not stable at 1600Mhz? You may need 1.65V for that RAM, if the RAM is rated for 1.65V then it should be completely safe to use at 1.65V and you shouldn't ever be afraid to use it at 1.65V; in fact, the majority of DDR3 is rated at 1.65V right now. Only above 1.8V do you start to get worried and even then it depends on the ICs. 4x2GB at 1600Mhz will be fine on the C3 revision CPU.

if both sticks have the same stock timing and voltage you shouldnt have a problem. Even tho with 4 sticks you might not beable to max your ram oc tho since it will stress the IMC more.

Lower power usage means they prob are using a small nm to produce the chips, it happens but really is not a concern other then the one that uses less watts might be better at overclocking.

So will the new sticks be fine to use with the old ones? I have not tried it yet.

From what I remember you can set the multiplier? to 6.66 for 1333 or 8.0 for 1600 or something like that. If I do this I think the 205 FSB increases it even further. I think it is only at 1.65v at the moment. Should I give it a go at 1600 and see if I can get it stable on the old ones, then add in the new? Can I use prime to test it or is there something better for ram?

Thanks so whatever I can get the old crusty ones running at, adding the new ones should not be a problem? Yes they are both 9-9-9-27 and have same voltage rating.

at most you might have to increase the IMC voltage to the ram to get them stable..and thats a maybe, XD would know more about that since he OWNS a PII and i dont .

Just run them both at stock and see if you are stable. If not, try increasing RAM voltage a click or two or even your CPU-NB voltage (this is your L3 cache, but also affects your memory speeds). I've seen plenty of people just add a few clicks of voltage to their RAM and were able to stabilize having 4 sticks of RAM.

Just to let you know, my RAM has a stock voltage of 1.95v and I've run them up to 2.05v with no problem at all, so don't worry about running it .01-.05v more than specified. As xd_1771 said, most RAM are specified for 1.5v-1.65v, but they can safely run up to 1.65v.

I increased it to 8.0x, which means it is running at 1640, 1.635v. It automatically changed the timing to 11-11-11-29. Do I set them back down to 9-9-9-27 manually? The cpu was easy but I really don't understand ram overclocking very well which is why I have been running it a 1366 (after FSB adjustment).

Yes, you should definitely set them back down to 9-9-9-27.
Apparently I've heard reports that AMD IMCs (or at least particularly x6 ones) actually get slowly degraded past 1.65V-1.7V.... I wouldn't consider tihs to be an entirely true rumour, but AMD IMCs are definitely at least more flexible than Intel's (i.e. no need to have VTT voltage follow up, IMC doesn't degrade right away).
