As for the top 3....
1. Half Life 2 (must have)
3. Bioshock 2
Give wow a go, you will either love it or hate it.
Wow is expensive though. I admit it's a fun game, but it's very addictive and expensive. I simply don't have the time to play it lol. Plus, right now you have to buy like four expansions and pay for a month just to get started lol.
I haven't seen anyone mention batman AA. I haven't played it but it gets recommended a lot. Maybe not the first thing to buy.
MW2 was good, but TBH it's hard to justify a $60 game for a 6hr campaign. The campaign was fun though, just very short. I play through games obsessively slowly and I still finished it in 6 hrs (I knew it was short and was still surprised, I was expecting it to take me about 10.). I'm not saying don't get it, just wait for a sale. Especially if you're low on $$ it's a bit expensive for a short game. IMO it's best to start playing the $20-30 games from a year or two ago that are awesome and last for a while.
If you like RPG's I HIGHLY recommend dragon age. Thats a good 80hrs + of gameplay for max $50 (less if you can catch a steam sale or something). That's not counting awakening or replay value.
And yes, I know a game's quality isn't determined by length, but MW2 is a fun 10hrs. Dragon age is a fun 100hrs. Crysis is a fun 20hrs. They're all really good games, it only makes sense to start with the ones with better value.
