I'm looking to build a computer to hook up to my parents TV (I believe it's a 54" Panasonic Plasma). The TV is modern and has HD and 1080p. They also have a surround sound system setup.

GPU (not in the budget):
EVGA GT 430 1gb
My stepdad already purchased this card. I was upset at first, but then saw it was the cheapest card with HDMI 1.4a support, so for a media center it works out.

MOBO:
AMD Athlon II X3 445

CPU:
Biostar A780L3L

Memory:
G. Skill 4gb (2x2) DDR3 1033

PSU:
Antec EarthWatts 380W

HD:
Samsung F3 1TB
Kingston 16GB SSD

Case:
APEX TX-381-C Micro ATX Tower

Budget: 300
Total: 373.70 w/ shipping

I have an extra DVD drive that I will use. If there is a remote control that works well with w7 for ~$10 I would like to get that as well. Basically this will be used for web surfing, slideshows, playing home videos, streaming, stuff like that. If I get the living room to myself when I'm visiting I may try and game on it a little bit. Relive CS on a 54" plasma .

It looks good, powerful enough CPU and an overall balanced system. As an alternative for a HDD I would advice a Samsung F3 or even a 5400 RPM 2TB Samsung F4. The thing is the HDD you chose isn't neither particularly fast, or quiet or roomy. If your folks want for example to record things a 500GB HDD may fill up fast.

1tb super quiet hdd and a 30gb ssd for booting so its silent until it loads the movie and then when its loaded quiet again. also sound proofing the inside maybe? or fanless heatsink?

I didn't think about the silent aspect, that is a pretty good idea. I switched the HD and added a SSD (bringing me slightly over budget). If just the OS is going onto the SSD, I don't think I should need more than 16GB.

how about a TV tuner for DVR functionality?

i recommend the Hauppauge 2250. it has dual tuners with hardware mpeg2 encoders so it can record 2 shows at once with no CPU load. works very well with media center.

I see ripoff generic memory--ah wait, it's out of stock. Looks like you're forced to get something else. Get this: 2x2 Crucial DDR3-1333 CL7 [Micron IC] - $39.99, $34 after promo DM15A02US - much, much better

I had that Apex case before, but for $35 shipped and without even that included PSU, it's not a good deal at all. At the moment I can't find any same-priced equivalent alternatives on Newegg. I'm a big fan of small form factor, have you considered going SFF?
