4 months into use: Rat 7 sucks!

Thread Starter
It's been great in terms of functionality: Took a while getting used to the DPI and the shape, but now my hands are entirely used to it.

The problem? Well here's my main problem: The metal surface is so close to the mousepad, that it has now started to grind against the mousepad. It hooks onto cloth, and it grinds against wood or my aluminum steelseries sx mousepad. I am entirely unable to use it right now. I've only been using it for 4 months and I assume the pads underneath have been worn away slightly (maybe by a 10th of a mm or less), just enough so that part of the metal on the bottom can grind against things. That's just not excusable though... any mouse shouldn't need replacing of any parts (be it the adhesive low-friction feet or anything more serious) after just 4 months. Especially for a mouse that cost me $110 new (when it first came out) which is designed specifically for gaming.

The other issue I've had is that the way it has been constructed, dust bits and tiny tiny hairs manage to find their way onto the sides of the adhesive pads (just over time), and they sometimes get into the laser area. The laser just entirely malfunctions until the hole where it sits is blown out. Never had this problem with any other previous gaming mice. Not a huge deal though.

Anyways, has anyone else experienced my main issue as well? I've sent Saitek/Madcatz (idk what the company is called) an email. I don't want to have to go out and find new low friction pads to put on the bottom (idk if a certain thickness would ruin the mouse's accuracy by raising it higher)... and I shouldn't have to pay more to get anything to have it working after only 4 months of use.

Ugh. (and no this hasn't been dropped or anything, I'm very careful with my stuff.

Kinda hard to go back to the store and go "Hi, this mouse has been great for 4 months... I'd like a refund now". tongue.gif

The warranty with the store is a 30 day period, and then it's through the manufacturer.

Weird thing is I can't pinpoint what is grinding on the bottom (I can tell it's part of the metal). I just put it down and the grinding stopped. Picked it up to look at the bottom and put it down again... grinding again. ???.

In that case I suggest you getting a photo to use, so we can try to find a solution.

If the metal pieces are made of aluminium, a razor blade and some patience will do the trick to file it down without making it look terrible.

If it's steel... Well, then you need to file it with a... file smile.gif

Yeh I've been trying to file down the points where I think it might be problematic. This is like an itch that I can't scratch lol. Can't pinpoint the spot where it's doing it (I know it's more to the right side of the mouse).

Yeah, that is really going to happen with a 4 month old mouse. It helps if you read more than the title.

This is SOOOOO frustrating. I can't for the life of me figure out what part is grinding.

When I hold the mousepad up to my screen with a white background, and I look with one eye underneath, and move the mouse around, I just can't see what's causing the grinding.

All I know is that the grinding is in fact metal on metal (as I tried grinding the metal of the bottom on the mousepad and that's the exact sound).

Alright so I implemented a temporary fix: Threw on another mouse low friction pad on the bottom (one of the five that came with my mousepad). I can feel it's uneven by something like a tenth of a mm (slight slight slight amount) just because I use my mouse so carefully... but it at least isn't grinding for now. I'll have the other four incase I need to strengthen up another side of the mouse.

I'm hoping Saitek will send me new mouse feet for this mouse, because it has specific fittings for it, and I don't want to have to go out and go to a ton of trouble finding mouse feet.

I'm certain this is a huge design flaw: The mouse is made of a cheap metal chassis which just adds a ton of weight to it (for the illusion of quality)... but this chassis hangs so low and it's so rigid (and the metal is far from frictionless) that it grinds so horribly.

I had loads of issues with the ra7,I kept it for one week then sent it back.I loved the comfort and adjust ability of it it fit really nice. But that back metal scrool wheel i hated it rub's my palm and made it uncomfortable. Not to mention the tracking i had,if i was playing a game through my cheap desktop speakers any noise in game would cause the mouse cursor to jump randomly all over the screen even without me touching it.They had a good idea with this mouse and it would been great if they would have lost the metal scroll wheel, used a diff laser and some thicker mouse feet i would have kept it.

Also i think Core pad or hyper glide sell replacement feet for the Rat
