Ummm....I think I'll disagree. Xeons are more "powerful" interms of OCing potential but when it comes to parallel computing power I think 48-cores will crush a 12-core system. And yes for a single mobo solution, you can have up to 48 AMD cores vs a SR-2 mobo solution. Although I'm sure there are Xeon server mobos that may be able to handle up to 4 Xeons? (not sure on this)

You're talking about 48-cores vs 12-cores (or 24 virtual threads working at 50% CPU capacity). Yes you can OC the Xeons very well but even then would it be powerful enough to out-calculate 48 cores? I highly doubt it.

yes, but in applications that will not use 48 cores, xeons will have the opteron over, and dont forget architecture counts for a lot, a with the 8 core beating the 16 core.

Yes, but if you're building a rig with that much CPU power it would make sense that you're going to use it with programs that can take advantage of alot of cores. I mean hell you have 12 Xeon cores, it wouldn't make sense for a program to only use up to 12 cores and not 48, because if it can use that any cores already (12) it makes sense for the program to use more. Unless for some weird reason it's optimized for 12 cores and not more.

But otherwise you're right. Small time applications will be faster with the Xeon but if you're buying a SR-2 with 2 Xeons simply for gaming purposes or others that won't even take advantage of the 12 cores then you're either just benching or have too much money to burn or just want the bragging rights.

When we're talking about total computing power with programs that can utilize alot of cores and optimized for parallel processing, like FOLDING and whatnot, 48-cores (even if they're inferior AMD ones) should trump 12 Xeon cores.

It's not a flame war. And I'm not saying AMD is better than Intel. Every setup/CPU/etc. has its own advantages and disadvanages. I called out that statement because the OP blatantly said "SR-2 is the most powerful" without qualifying any of it.

Depending on what it is used for either the dual Xeon or the quad Magny-Cours is "the most powerful." But to simply say that the dual Xeon SR-2 is the most powerful setup is incorrect. Besides, there are Xeon setups that probably will trump a puny SR-2 (ie full on server mobos with quad Xeon sockets?).
