So im an AMD guy thinking of switching to intel.. - Page 2

yeah amd is only behind when comparing AMD's best (1100t) vs intel's best (i7 2600k SB) but that may change with bulldozer's release, but may not, at your level i choose amd as you get much more bang for buck, like quad core amd's at 2.8ghz for the same price as dual core 2Ghz intel.

You forgot Sandy Bridge 2500K, and every other Westmere/Bloomfield/Lynnfield i7s.

But to the OP, if you're willing to spend as little money as possible go AMD.

well you know what i mean, and hopefully the OP did too, the 1090t is ahead of core2quad, and on par maybe a little behind i5's and beaten by the i7.

Can your motherboard take a 955? That would definitely be the best route to go. You can find them all over the place for $100 used.

The old Athlon 64 isn't a very good chip these days. If your board can take it, an update to AthlonII or PhenomII will do you very nicely.
Even if your board is locked to AM2 and can't run AM2+ then you should be able to find a PhenomII x4 920 or 940 which will run.
If you really want to go to Intel, then go buy DDR3 and a decent i5-760 (or sandy bridge i5) and a board to suit. Yes it's expensive, but there is not a vast point to doing a half-arsed job of it.

Does AMD pay you guys?

OP hold out for a few months (you've made it this far) and grab either a bulldozer chip or a sandy bridge chip.

During the waiting start saving some money, you'll want to move up to DDR3, a new board with a decent chip will cost you around $350-$400.

Don't listen to the AMD people, every chip AMD currently has is behind Intels last gen chips. If you're a gamer your best choice would be an i5-2500k in a few months. Or a used i5-750/760 now.

Anything else is a dead end upgrade, you're upgrading from a dead end now, no sense sending money to obtain another soon to be dead end.

Bulldozer will show Intel what they're capable of but then Intel will try to raise the bar with Ivy Bridge. Eventually, a small company like ARM will come and replace or join the competition.

Best bet is used i5 750/760 and a decent P55 board or if you would like to save money then save for a couple month and buy the new i5-2500k.

Clock for clock Intel is faster than AMD at this point.

op has a budget doesnt he? says 150 to 200bucks. not everyone has the luxury to upgrade to sandy bridge which is being recalled. going to phenom II is not bad idea either. i doubt a phenom II will bottleneck his gpu. get a phenom II 955 for like 100 bucks to 130 bucks and overclock it to 3.8ghz....seems more reasonable and keep everything you have. i highly doubt 150 bucks to 200 bucks will be enough for a bulldozer and sandy bridge upgrade.
