[ZDNet] Is it time for an eBay renaissance?

But eBay CEO John Donahoe’s vision goes beyond riding PayPal’s coattails. In a chat with analysts, Donahoe said eBay can be a bridge between offline and online commerce. He wants to ditch the “e” in e-commerce. The argument in a nutshell looks like this:

Mobile apps are bringing coupons, checkout, payments and price comparisons to brick and mortar retailers. EBay has some early leadership in mobile apps and has bought companies like Milo, an early shopping tool, and Brands4Friends, a German social shopping site.

eBay’s mobile apps are backed by PayPal.

The company aims to sit in the middle of the transaction and shopping experience as it connects buyers, sellers and developers.

Very interesting read guys...

Looks like he makes some valid points, Go eBay!!!

(Sorry moderators if this ended up in the wrong section)

Ebay has become the parody of itself... My mom used to work there, only bad experiences.

Still, it's ok for picking up cheap or rare stuff

I hate selling on there. I used to sell a lot, but then the fees and paypal fees were almost 30-40% of the sale price.

This. I don't understand why I need to pay 8-10% of my sale price...that's often a lot of money. Then add on top the 6% from paypal...it's just too high of a margin. So I moved to craigslist...

I used to buy a lot from eBay, but because of fees (I'm guessing) prices seem to have gone up. No more computer parts deals...

A very valid point, furthermore, Banks often charge you for using pay pal...

Looks like everyone wants a piece of the American Pie, meh!

I can see why there is a need for a renaissance, the only problem is, it will never happen, not really...

I have to wonder how much of investor's money was used by eBay through investments to inflate their financial statements... Seems to be the going trend/practice of many corporations....

I still cannot see why some other .com businesses are still so huge..

It's too bad that ebay couldn't function more like a real store--then it might have some redeeming value.

It would be pretty cool to see a huge eBay facility in major cities. You walk in to a private booth with a touch screen that lets you view what's available for auction, bid on any items you want, have a bid war for however long until no one bids higher and walk out with the items. Sellers would just walk in to speak to an auctioneer, which would then inspect the condition and set the starting price of any items.

Edit: I'm surprised Google hasn't bought out eBay/PayPal. Yet.

Same here, I no longer use ebay that much because of the ridiculous fees. If there's any reason eBay is losing market share, it's that right there. A few other minor issues here and there as well, like limiting the shipping fee you can charge and not letting you leave negative feedback on buyers.

I would love to see craigslist, but on a national and more organized scale. Have more categories with some basic filterable criteria in each, and search anywhere in the nation (not through a 3rd-party site). Have some sort of a feedback system, and online payment system. Most importantly, keep it free (or cheap, like $0.10/listing for an unlimited time), and bam - you have something that will steal away the remainder of ebay's share in the blink of an eye. So much potential...
