HP Customer Gets the Runaround for Installing Linux

It's entirely possible for software to cause hardware damage. For instance, an overclocking utility, whether buggy or abused by the end-user, could potentially result in fried hardware. But should installing Linux on a system that ships with Windows automatically void existing hardware warranties? A reader who wrote in to the Consumerist is complaining that HP gave him the runaround when attempting to have the OEM replace an in-warranty battery on an HP netbook he installed Linux on.

i'm not sure where to post this so i'm putting it here.

You should post that in news, it's freaking hilarious.

eh they weren't trying to void his warrant for using linux, they just wanted the warranty ID number, which is their fault not to include in a manual or a sticker at the bottom of the case, and only have it accessible by a windows program.

i'm sure it saves them a whole dollar at most to not produce a sticker for such a thing.

what kind of news though?

If the code is required and this is specified in their warranty it just means they do indeed void their hardware warranty for wiping Windows.

It also means I'll never buy a laptop from HP.
nothing stopping you from grabbing the code and storing it somewhere else, then wiping windows.

nothing hp said it was voiding warranty by installing linux, they were just trying to get the warranty code.

i wouldn't buy a hp anyway, shoddy quality at best, might get a year out of a hp laptop before it decides to croak on you.

Saw this on reddit a few days ago. Yeah basically the same day HP also announced that their printers and some PCs will now be running Linux.
