No real "need" from a thermal POV to WC a sub-95W chip. Escpecially when all you're fiddling with is a multiplier and not FSB.
Agreed on the good air cooler, I listed the h70 because some of the draw of a custom loop is not having to jam a giant cooler into your case. You pay a premium for the h7, but the trade off is its smaller form factor and the ability to directly exhaust CPU heat.

I would have thought you could read between the lines on this one... we are obviously talking about "stable". 99 percent of the time, when anyone on this forum talks about "hitting", "doing", "reaching", or "running at" a clock speed, they mean stably. I will admit that stable is slightly up for debate (I like 50 linx passes myself), but pretty much no one is talking about simply booting windows.

lol... you dont even know if OP's referring to a 2500k or a 2600k w/ HT

you also dont know how much voltage his chip needs

you also dont know his ambient

and the list goes on.... get the point? "h70 can do 4.8ghz" has no validity at all, you dont have enough details to make such a statement

all i know is, the lower your temps are, the more stable your rig will run, speaking from personal experience

water cooling benefits greatly when you're talking "extreme" OC's

My SB is under water.
For me its worth it because im all about the low temps with 24/7 overclocks and the quietness is great also. Its also a nice way to combat my high ambient of about 75f-80f.

I don't care about op's statement. My statement, that sandy bridge will hit 4.8 ghz with an h70 (or on air), provided you have a decent chip, stands on its own. My statement holds true for both the 2500k and 2600k with hyperthreading. If I wanted to qualify it more specifically (eg: no hyperthreading) I would have.

Again, I'm not sure quite why you're nitpicking here. Also, ambient doesn't really affect the watercooling debate. Comparatively W/Cing and air cooling will be affected comparably by high ambients.

Keep in mind, I watercool. If I had a sandy bridge CPU, I would watercool. I like watercooling, I think it's fun. I also think it looks great, that does not mean however, that I will try to justify watercooling such a low power chip as SB for performance reasons. Now once the 125-135 watt chips come out in a few months... things may be different.

I'm Prime95 72H stable (24H each in all 3 tests) at 4.8GHz using 1.4V on my i5 2500K. MAX temps are 65-66C.

Oh I have a measly $23 CM Hyper 212+ and a $10 added fan.

Water cooling would help keep temps in check for using 1.5-1.6V during benching and hit 5.2-5.3GHz, but the cost for the slight increase isn't worth it for me at least.

why post in this thread if you dont care about OP's statement, this thread is about helping the OP

it just seems pointless to make blanket statements rather than asking the OP for details and then providing specific advice

"will hit" for one person means 10 linx runs, and 12 hours p95 for another person... it helps no one

and OP, you cant expect detailed answers if you dont provide detailed questions , not to mention worth is purely relative/subjective

Living in New Mexico, the summers get over 100 degrees , even with the low temps of my i7 2600k, currently running a 4.6ghz 24/7 stable at close to stock voltages, but planning on going higher when i get a less finicky mobo. Im planning on going with a water cooling solution simply because my house even with AC gets ridiculously hot and ambient temps get nasty.

Water will always be a lot quieter than air cooling (in most cases at least)
