prebuilt vs. custom

Thread Starter
i need some help proving that this prebuilt is inferior to this custom.

the contenders:

Prebuilt: ASUS Essentio CM1630-06 (with state sales tax = $497.94)

Custom: "New Rig" $518.30 including tax and S&H ($497.00 with Promo Code discounts @ newegg)
CPU $129.62 tax and S&H

MOBO $49.99

RAM $41.99 (15% off Promo code = $35.69)

HDD $69.99 ($10.00 off Promo Code = $59.99)

DVD-RW $18.99

PSU $39.99 ($5.00 off Promo Code = $34.99)

Case $49.99

Case Fan (don't like the front blue led fan on case and it doesn't have a way to turn led off on the case) $5.99

OS $99.99

Newegg Shipping = $11.76

so...is the custom worth it or does the prebuilt the winner?

I would say custom because you get the experience of building the computer!

Ok, the asus is a pretty basic machine, 4GB memory, 1TB HDD, a DVDRW and onboard graphics.
Software wise, everything on it is free stuff, the office install doesn't count as you need to buy an activation code...
I'll edit with my views on the custom rig in a minute.
Edit:
I'd swap the PSU to the Antec Earthwatts 380 for similar money.
Or the Corsair CX430 which is even less after rebates.

You picked out a quad core, and came in for a few cents less. I'd say the custom is way better for the money, 2 more cores and .5TB more HDD space being a winner.

the Asus is a dual core and i dont see a video card in it. You get what you pay for.

Locked bios AND you have to consider other things as well. For one, the RAM will be junk. For the most part no where near how the A-Data will perform. Also, the PSU is junk in the prebuilt. The Rosewill probably ain't that great either, but better than the 380w logi-junk that it comes with. The OEM case is also junk and even with modification will still be crap on top of crap. So in short, the custom is WAY better, and you can do so much more and have way more room for advancement for upgrades. I see the only plus in prebuilts is the fact that is usually comes with Windows 7. But nowadays, they don't even do that. They just give you a recovery partition or some crap. But I suppose the key is the important thing.

EDIT: Case is actually not that bad. And also if I were going to do a prebuilt, it WOULD be asus, but nonetheless custom trumps it.

No machine money can buy will have the time, effort and skill put into the build like my own.

Every screw, wire nut and bolt is carefully used in its right spot.
Small hiccups are things that should be changed from factory are avoided.
Cables are properly run, things are neat and organized for easy expandibility.

Many of the cases you hear about being so great are just another pig from Antec's line.
They are all overrated. Its about size, quality and reliability.

forgot to mention, this is a machine i'm considering building for a buddy of mine. he doesn't game, but he might. i think the custom would handle gaming with the addition of a card better than the prebuilt and i also think the custom has better longevity. then again, that's why i started this thread.

Sometimes prebuilt can be cheaper than custom and save you time if you can find a promo code.

Make sure you're getting unlocked bios and brand name components from a reputable source such as cyberpowerpc. Also you don't have same warranty opportunities with oem components, my evga 9800 gx2 got fried after 1 year but since it was oem I got stuck with a dead card.

No pre-built can match the price if you do it yourself. Period.
If so, youre buying parts from the wrong places.

Most prebuilt PC's are 2 1/2 -4 star rated at best.
