For reasons mentioned already, and it will be $650+ as you will need to upgrade the PSU as well.

Plus summer is coming and the 580s generate a LOT of heat. (Temps are under control but the heat coming out of them... wow...excellent HS design)

Overclock the 580, get the SSD. Less power conumption and less heat. He'd have a nice chunk of money left he could use on another 580 in the future. If he's happy with his FPS I don't see the need to use up all the money.
