[io9]Slim chance that asteroid named after Stargate villain could hit Earth in 2036 - Page 5

This was a topic on the news yesterday and I watched an interview with a physicist about it. What the article skims over is that the asteroid will come close twice. The difficulty in determining whether it will hit for sure is that the first pass is going to take it close enough for the atmosphere to affect the trajectory. There are just too many variables to figure it out for sure.

Why can't we deal with this now? Because no one on earth (as far as I know) has ships capable of getting out of orbit. Even if we could, there's the problem of hitting a rock 250 meters wide in space where things are measured in hundreds of kilometers. Still, while it would certainly suck to be within a thousand miles of the impact site, the rest of the world should survive with a brand new love of life.

The important question is, will Bruce Willis still be alive in 2036 to take this puppy out...

I get the feeling even if an asteroid was going to hit the Earth with 100% certainty no major government would do anything about it. Corporate funds are far more important.

Well, this doesn't sound like it would cause mass extinctions thank goodness. That's what I was mostly worried about. I'll just be sure not to live on the west coast when it does come to hit. Plenty o warning.

herpa derpa. Governments are quite happy to go to war over next to nothing. Sending a nuke to intercept an asteroid would be quite easy.

This made me laugh. From the source:

In which thousands of fragmented pieces would remain and cause more damage?

Facedesk. If a high powered nuke destroyed that nuke, there wouldn't be many fragments, but that's not the point. The most probable outcome would be to detonate the nuke simply so it pushes the asteroid out of its trajectory.
