Random ChkDsk

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,

I have a 1 TB WD Caviar Black, 64 Mb cache, SATA 6G (1002-FAEX) hard-drive. I am running this as a storage drive with my windows 7 64-bit installed on my 64 gb C300 SSD.

The problem I am having is that right before windows 7 starts to load, I get the error that my drive (the 1 TB WD drive) needs to be checked for consistency. It does a check and finds no errors or bad sectors. It does this "chkdsk" maybe 2 out of every 5 boots.

I could be wrong about this part, but it seems as if it only does it when I restart (or shutdown and turn back on) after my computer has been left on for a prolonged period of time, either a few hours or overnight.

I have tried the LifeGuard WD Diagnostic tools, I did the quick test and the full test, the tests all passed and no errors were found.

Despite the fact that this drive passed these tests, is the chkdsk a premature sign of hard-drive failure? I should mention that it's only 1 month old...

Truly thanks for the help.

I should also mention that there have been no freeze-ups whatsoever. Everything seems to be working fine. It's just that the chkdsk at random times, despite a proper shutdown, is puzzling.

Thank you for the response. I've actually read through the link along with many others like it. I can go ahead disable it, however, what I want to know is what is CAUSING the drive to do a chkdsk. This way I would like to know if the drive is beginning to fail...

I should also mention that as of my last response, I ran an error test using HD Tune Pro, there were zero errors found. Yet the random CHKDSKs persist......

Update, I looked in the Event Viewer to find a several instances of the following:

1) there is an NTFS error, it says "the file system structure on this disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run chkdisk utility on the volume."

2) there is a disk error, it says "the driver detected a controller error on \\Device\\Harddisk2\\DR2" This error also has several instances of it.

Also, I wanted to reiterate that I ran HD Tune Pro, windows chkdsk, and Western Digital LifeGuard tools, to check for errors, NO errors, NO bad sectors were found. There are no freeze-ups, no BSODs, no slow-downs of any kind.

This issue is really eating at me, I would truly appreciate some help regarding the manner. Is my disk failing me?

In order to find out which drive is Disk2, I went into Disk Management.

Disk0: my SSD with Win7 64bit on it.
Disk1: The 1 TB WD drive that is scanned by chkdsk.

These are the only two drives I have, so there is no disk2! I am even more befuddled...

Controller error? have you tryed installing your chipset drivers? IE. Intel INF?

I've actually had this problem on my laptop quite a bit, what you should try is putting in the Windows 7 Cd and booting from it into the Recovery Console.
Once there use chkdsk to not only check the disk but repair it as well.

chkdsk C /p /r

Now you should also overwrite the master boot record and the boot sector, these commands work for me every time I have a problem before Windows fully loads.
fixboot C
fixmbr C
Btw the recovery console is called Startup Repair in Windows 7.

Okay, I will try this. Before I do though, I have a question. Before windows is booting, it wants to do a chkdsk on drive d: which is my 1 TB drive. Windows is installed on C:, the SSD. When I am doing chkdsk /p /r on the recovery console, should I be typing in chkdsk C /p /r or chkdsk D /p /r ?

Likewise with fixboot/fixmbr C or fixboot/fixmbr D ?

Thanks.
