Thoughts on the Q9400?

Thread Starter
I'm currently bidding on a used Q9400 on eBay, hoping to replace my E7200. So far, I am winning the bid with five days to spare. I've put my maximum bid at $30, and I am not bidding beyond that. If it does cross that barrier, then I'll try to find another cheap Core 2 Quad auction...

Anyways, any thoughts on the Q9400? I've heard it doesn't overclock that well, but I generally don't overclock, so that's not an issue. It only has 6mb of L2 cache, but if I can get this more cheaply than a Q9550, then I'll probably like the savings more than the performance gains.

I plan on sticking with LGA775 until Haswell/Rockwell comes out.

And oddly enough, it appeared that the price Q6600 being put up for auction at around the same time as this Q9400 is already up to $50 in a matter of hours. The Q6600 is an older chip, isn't it?

I would save money for the Ivy Bridge or Bulldozer. People tend to bid like crazy near the end of the listing.

Ugh... so it seems that my hopes for a cheap Core 2 Quad are dashed, then, right?

Just got outbid.

Why are the LGA775 processors still so expensive? A Q9550 is $280, a Q9505 is $235, and a Q8400 is $170. What gives?

If you want to stick with 775, then should wait a deal to get on Q9550. Q9400 is ok, it is a 45nm quad but multi 8 is low. Probably go for a Q9550 if price is right. On the other hand, Q6600 is 65nm old school, if you want to get it, you need to find G0-SLACR.
