If anything, Bioware has proven that they do sequels very well. People freaked out about some of the ME2 changes and ME2 (speaking as the majority) was a better game. Dragon age + awakening is probably in the top 5 for single player PC game experiences I've ever had dating back to linewars and Wolfenstein 3D.
i enjoyed dragon age, but it was very flawed, esp when you consider who made the game.
first of all character building was an epic fail. They allow us to assign attribute points, but really all you should do is dump them all in a single stat. They didnt allow for alternate builds to be done. Sorry, in DnD, you can make an excellent warrior from high intel/wisdom builds, as your warrior is fights smarter, not harder like a str build. Then the skill trees were terrible, they made it entirely impossible to combine skills from different trees, all you did was select another one from the tree you decided on, until you got them all, and then you get all your prestige skills.
The combat was also weak. It was designed around aggro and aoe and crowd control. Those are the the basis for covering up a weak combat system. Also no where near the depth of combat you would see in DnD.
Loot was horrendous, unless you were in massive armor, you had jack to use. Not to mention that weapons were scarce. It was horribly done, and i felt like i was playing a game from years ago. The differences between swords and axes was not there, regardless of what the "stats" said. Itemization was horrible in the game. One of the worst i have ever seen.
The world was somewhat generic, you didnt really feel like you were in it. They talk about how it was a gritty world and it was racist and all that stuff, but really they did a poor job pulling it off. Compare that to the gritty world filled with racism that the witcher did. They pulled it off.
The story was good, but not quite up to biowares usually standards. Loghain was about the only decently written character in the game. Just about everyone else in the game was your typical stereotype with no true depth to them. Sten and loghain are pretty much the exceptions. No one in the game ranks up with some of the best written characters out there though, ammon jerro and kreia.
In spite of the game not living up to baldurs gate even in the slightest, i enjoyed the game, not enough to blow money on the overpriced and low content expansion, or the weak DLC they sold.
Now dragon age 2 comes out, and seems to be taking everything i hate about gaming, and strapping it in. Generally i expect sequels to fix the errors of the game before it. They are fixing the combat, they arent fixing the story, the world lore is for the most part being ruined, look at the retconn on the qunari. Everything about the new game screams i want to sell this to 13 year olds.
With biowares potential, they should be delivering epic games. Maybe the faltered this once. I think it comes from EA's influence, and that Mythic was combined with bioware. So you have alot of philosophies from other developers getting mixed in, not to mention the fact they opened up multiple more bioware studios and hired all new people into them. So the bioware name is nothing more than a name now. Its not the same people you have seen make you every game.
I will buy dragon age 2 at a later date when the price has dropped and the dlcs are included. It is bioware and i can give them another chance at some point.Edited by Vhati - 2/13/11 at 11:47am
