Installing SLI?

Thread Starter
I have 2 GTX 580s with waterblocks and a dual parallel installed and I'm just curious as to the optimal installation on the motherboard.

Do I put them both in the PCI slots closest to the CPU? Farthest? Just confused because the directions say put the first one closest. Then it says if you do SLI, put the second one farthest. And if you do 3-way, put the last one in the middle.

Any help?

Hi.

You ought to be able to use any combination of the 4 PCIe x16 slots.

The manual may be advising you to skip a slot so that there is adequate ventilation between the cards, but since you are liquid cooling this may be less of an issue.

I would take a look at the SLI bridge that you intend to use and use the closest slot to the CPU, then the next one that will accommodate the PCI bridge (some bridges are rigid).

Reading the manual it seems that all four of the PCIe slots on your board are capable of x16, meaning that it does not matter which two you use (you have 32 lanes to play with, so x16 each for 2 way SLI).

I would say that the manual suggests spacing the cards out to allow more air flow round them for cooling purposes, nothing else. With full cover waterblocks it is not going to matter, put them where you want.

With your chosen EK bridge you do not have a spacing choice. It will be adjecent slots. As mentioned above it is ok.

It is recommended in the user guide to go slot 1 and 3 for X16 X16 and for 3 cards it is
slot 1,2,3 for x8 x8 x16

All the red slots at x16. Ofcourse with 3 cards there is not enough bandwidth on the controller so that is why it will be x8 x8 x16. The manual recommends using slot 1 and 3 for dual SLI (I think they do it for cooling) but I think slot 1 and 2 will run x16 x16 as well in SLI mode. Why wouldn't they?
