I would leave your PC hardware wise, as is, and begin to save up for a new system over the next several months. By the time you have enough the new processors would be out from both AMD and Intel and you might just be getting 5-10 times the PC you currently have for a decent price.
Hmm, thanks for the advice. I agree with most of what you have said and cheers for answering the question. I think I will upgrade RAM and HDD. Every day use is always bottle necked by HDD as it is the slowest component. I upgraded my Dad's old computer from a AMD 3900 with 400hz 1Gb RAM to a Q9550, mobo, 4GB RAM for win 7 but it wasn't until a new Spinpoint was put in that there was a difference in everyday task loading and performance. I would love to buy and build a new system but I simply don't have the money atm nor can I justify the cost.
Thanks all the same!

You already have a 320 GB 7200RPM HDD. Unless you need the space or you're upgrading to an SSD, you won't see that much of an improvement.

The question is, what do you want your PC to do better? (i.e gaming, everyday use)
