I understand the thermal issue that you are facing with a pair of GTX470s in an Asus P6X58D-E.

My suggestion: Scythe Setsugen 2.

Scythe has recently released a dual slot cooler which supports (up to) GTX470.

Official link: http://www.scythe-eu.com/en/products...etsugen-2.html

I glanced through a few reviews and noted that it can drop:
- HD4890 idle temp from 58C to 37C, load temp from 76 to 54
- POV GTX460 Beast idle temp from 39C to 37C, load temp from 70 to 59
- Gigabyte GTX5870 SOC load temp from 74C to 65
- GTX470 load temp from 92C to 66C (this is of particular importance to you and so I list the link: http://www.overclockingstation.de/co...en-2-a504.html)

Another GTX470 with Setsugen 2 review is here:
http://www.dexgo.com/index.php?site=...dware&seite=15

You can find other reviews listed out in Scythe link. All seem to point that this can be a good option for your GTX470 SLI. Granted that it will not be as good as a 3-slot aftermarket cooler but it will be better than stock cooling.

One note: since this cooler (like all aftermarket coolers) dumps heat inside your case, you will have to manage this dump well. This will be another topic but it does not look very hard to solve.

I hope this gives you some help.

Scythe Setsugen 2 i picked up 2 of these and they work but i had to play around with them for 2 days to get them to better then stock really.. the problem is that the top card gets really hot while the bottom one isnt. to solve this i had to flip my case on it side and put a fan right on top of the first card to help get cool air. im now getting max 77c load in furmark for 10min. and the 2nd card dont get above 70c.

I was going to make a thread exactly like this, my top card is reaching past 100c in 3DMARK and games at 100% fan (its a twin frozr) I also have the HAF-X VGA duct fan and a 200mm side fan pointed right at it. Problem is lack of space between cards.

I find myself in a similar situation. I have SLI 470s and overclocking is a no no on my gigabyte UD3R. Would getting the scythe setsugen 2 for my top card and a 3 slot cooler for my bottom card help alot? I have a antec 902. I have a side intake fan and i am adding 2 antec spot cool fans also.

Im aiming to OC both cards without getting artifacts due to heat.

Will the above be fine? i cannot afford a new board.

The cheapest (but likely least effective) help could be simply buying better thermal paste. Putting in some Arctic Silver MX5 on my 460 dropped temps a few C, I'm sure it'd do nothing but help your 470's.

I used to have a build with a 470, and man do those things run hot and loud! I ended up putting in a Zalman VF3000F, but the cooler itself takes 2 slots, so it's not really relevant here.

Try those two Setsugens with some quality thermal paste. Make sure you're using the right amount and that you're mounting it properly... it doesn't make sense that your temps are still so high after replacing the stock heatsinks.

Up until last week I was running two 470s in SLI and I had the same situation. I got an incredible deal ($339) for a GTX 580, so I sold the cards and picked the 580 up. The only option you really have is either go with another motherboard or spend about as much money on a water cooling mod. There are really no air coolers that will help with the situation.
