[GamersMint] Will Apple be the death of handheld gaming? - Page 2

I'm traveling right now and I like playing on my captivate, but with it's damned battery life switching to my ipod touch is inevitable. Most of the games are ported to either one so it isn't too bad. I just have a lot more games on my phone since that is the one I have with me the most.

I know loads of people who play their Nintendo DS for fun, their Blackberry for fun, but I only know of a few iPhone owners, and neither of them use it for playing games lol...

People have their own definition of a gaming experience and I would not argue with that but record sale doesn't really lie. Games like angry bird have record sale close to AAA games like Call of Duty and that's undeniable. Will Apple be the death of handheld gaming? I doubt it, Sony and Nintendo can easily incorporate games like angry bird into their handheld devices. If they market their device well enough; consumers will spend their money on them.

5 years ago, people would have laughed at you if you said that Apple will be a dominant force in the handheld gaming market.

Not much has changed.

You'd think we'd have learned from the market crash of 83, but I guess not. The App store is saturated with crap and clones of that crap, just like it was back in the 80s. Eventually we'll get another "ET" and people will realize that touchscreen gaming is terrible for anything other than stupid puzzle games.

It's difference between comparing a PC to a console. At the end of the day, there are exclusives, different controls, and with handhelds there is the ability to do multiplayer.

Maybe once a game library really picks up, but there are still many things that separate them.

Aren't games on those devices more rudimentary and mindless than, say, a device solely designed for gaming?

I think he's absolutely right. And I love it.

I honestly haven't felt myself completely fitting in with this "hardcore" crowd. I think 99% of the design error in modern games has been not putting enough focus on the tutorial and simple controls. We've been practically TRYING to make gaming itself an "elitist" thing that you have to take time to get into.

I'm actually somewhat glad the iPhone has changed that. If it means developers will stop focusing on big-name mass-appeal shooter titles that cost $60, and maybe stop focusing on hi-tech graphics, hire on some indie developers for their consoles, we may actually see some positive change here.
