Upgrading Help

Thread Starter
I havent stayed ontop of graphics cards especially on the Nvidia side since the 8800 series. I upgraded from my 8800GTX SLi to an Ati 4870x2 and simply saw nothing to gain from upgrading. In fact, I still don't. I think it's pretty stupid to upgrade until new consoles come out, only then will graphics on the PC be actually worth upgrading for because let's face it: graphics are dictated by the consoles and there are seldom few games that actually go above and beyond the consoles like STALKER and obviously Crysis. Very very very little else you can actually justify a graphics card upgrade.

But - my hand is being forced. ATi has simply been broken for me. Ever since I started using recent ATi drivers over the past 6 months, my 4870x2 has been borked. Whatever ATi messed up on with their 10.5-10.7 drivers back in like October with completely broke my video card. They broke alot of 4870x2 cards with them but even after "fixing" the driver issues with 10.8 or 10.9 with them, mine has stayed permanently borked unlike alot of other users. I had it somewhat stable with 10.11 but couldn't play any intensive games without crashing. I tried 11.1 - and that has completely broken my card. Even if I go back to 10.1 I can't play any games. Took me 6 hours to get Windows booting correctly without an ATi BSOD.

tldr: ATi messed up my card with drivers so now I have to upgrade. I'm going to try to wipe Windows but I have a feeling it may not help. I must go Nvidia now. What's the story? What's their leading card, what's the best option, and is there any upcoming new cards I should be aware of? I've been playing nothing but PS3 and Xbox 360, which Im content with, so I am in no rush. If I've gone 5-7 months now without PC gaming, I still can.

Top of the line? GTX580.
What's the best bang for your buck? GTX560
Since you say you haven't done much gaming, no need to get the ultra high end.

One of the great cards out right now is the Gigabyte GTX560 SOC w/ 1Ghz OC from factory.

Hmmm I'll have to look into the GTX560 then. +rep

I have been using 8800GTX SLI until a couple months ago when one of them died. Now, I have switched to a single GTX570.

I suggest you to do similarly. You have an additional option of GTX560 Ti (which was not out back then for my consideration). Since PC gaming is not your primary aim, getting either one (instead of top GTX580) now and then add a second one for SLI in a later stage is a good strategy, IMHO.
Reference GTX570s basically have all come out and non-reference cards are coming out.

Upcoming card from Nvidia is the dual GPU GTX590, which is likely to be a GTX580x2 (downclocked GTX580). It might come by end of this month of next month. But this card does not appear to fit well with your gaming habit and so is not worthy to wait for.

I suppose it depends on your buying habits. Going by the 8800 SLI and the 4870x2, I'm guessing you're the type to buy on the high end?

Flagship: GTX 580, with the 590 hopefully being released soon
Balanced: GTX 570
Bang for Buck: GTX 560; this card has proven to be ridiculously powerful for its price bracket, along with SLI capability; once OC'd it comes to stock 570 levels.

You basically have "seven" options; single card of the above, SLI of the above, or wait for the 590.

Do you have any plans for gaming? Crysis 2 comes out next month, which is probably the only reason to get an SLI setup going, at least right now. Otherwise, a single 570/580 will cut it for a good while.

hmmmm the gtx590 seems to be interesting. I like SLi and crossfire configs. My problem is always having the space taken up in my rig. I don't believe I can do an SLi without removing my sound card. So the gtx590 sounds like an awesome card.

Crysis 2 is the main reason I'm upgrading, and then whatever else decides to come out afterward.
