A couple pointers needed, unlocked 555 BE OC - Page 3

Hey at least OP knows the risks involved with running the CPU on that motherboard. And we all take risks when we start OC'ing our CPUs. And that is where we all have to make the decision of how much risk to take. If I thought my board would catch on fire I definitely wouldn't leave the machine on and then leave the house. But this forum isn't called RunningOurMachinesAtStock.net or Underclockers.net. It is called Overclockers.net and that is what we do. We change settings and try to squeeze performance out of our equipment. Unfortunately a few people push a little too far and they pay the price. But congratulations to OP for getting a decent OC out of your rig. Hopefully you won't be seeing the fire department anytime soon.

But I can only give you both sides of the coin its up to you to decide if its dangerous...so the above was the bad side...here is the good:

If you want to stay as a B55 chip and make the chip hit 4ghz + you most certainly need 1.5v running to the cpu, as a difference, the chip as a dual core at 4ghz will most certainly run at stock volts 1.38v.

In terms of fine tuning i would say the biggest jump in performance came when i increased the cpu-nb to 2800mhz and to get the nb stable at that speed i need 1.4v

I dont really mess with ram timings cause i never seem to get them right, all i did was speed my ram to 1600mhz from 133mhz, and my system runs pretty good with no bottlenecks as far as i can tell.
I think most people don't put direct air on their mosfets.
I dunno about 1.5, I got 3.8 at 1.4 (default VCore) and 4.0 at 1.425. Max stable CPU-NB was only 2400, but that's without touching any voltages from stock.

A couple interesting things: I compared performance at 2400NB vs 2600NB, and 5-5-5-15@DDR2 800 vs 4-4-4-12@DDR2 800 vs 5-5-5-15@DDR2 1066, biggest difference was only ~%5, in many cases no difference. Then I ran FSB at 217x18 (to stay at 3900) and performance was again virtually identical to the other settings.

My biggest problem? Cool and Quiet will not enable. It must be forced off by overclocking with this board. That kind of sucks. I'd rather not OC by FSB 'cause I don't want to touch voltages much. I'll have to poke around and see if a newer BIOS changes anything with CnQ, but as-is I can't get it to work which is a real dissapointment.

The 555 BE is a surprisingly great chip though, I'm very impressed and I'm sure on another board it would go over 4.0 pretty easy.

On the downside, at 3.9 it's only 200 points higher 3dmark06 than my 3.6GHz Q6600 using the same GPU, at 500 less than the Q9550 at 3.7GHz with same card.

Found the sweet spot, 17.5x220, CnQ starts working.

X2 unlocked to X4 @ 3.85Ghz at stock voltages with CnQ enabled on "budget" board, I'm pretty happy how this turned out!

Well... stock voltages does sound good, but I've warned you. 3+1 is bad enough, but that it's MSI instantly makes it 10X worse. I don't want to see you on my mosfet blew examples list later this year.

It idles at 880MHz/1.03V, (default 1.40 in bios). NB stays under 45C at full load, mosfets feel cool and get passing air from the side to the top. I really doubt I'll have a failure.

During OCCT, CPU 52C after 37 minutes:

Sadly enough this machine won't see much load. I just had the opportunity to play with an all-AMD machine, non-aggressive OC turned out nice.

I would just like to point out that you have your 212+ facing the wrong way. I had mine like that and then changed to facing out back and got a 5-7 degrees case temp drop
post #28 of 28
It'll blow in around ~4-8 months if not immediately during a heavy stability test
Just takes some time to do it, as observed by OCN members

I've warned you.... a 3+1 is bad enough, but when it's an MSI NIKOS MOSFET design, it's pretty much an instant death sentence right there
