Gtx 580 or gtx 480 1536

Thread Starter
I've been wracking my brain about this, looked at alot of benchmarks etc. My question is to you all is..

do you think that $200 is worth the difference? Mind you I am upgrading from a GTS 8800. I have been tossing the idea around to just get the 480 and buy a SSD drive with the money I have saved.

I am not an overclocker (yeah yeah, on an overclocking forum ) just an avid video gamer with a love for high performance.

i7 processor; 8gig ddr3; good airflow case (no water cooling) on Windows 7.

Another small question; I play on an LCD. I have never experienced it but does the HDMI make a big difference in looks (That is, from a VGA?)

Thanks for reading; hopefully this doesn't annoy people, I am sure this type of **** gets asked constantly.

I've lurked here for years, never made an account. FAIL!

GTX 570 has about the same performance as a 480 and is a little cheaper.

Without straying from your choices I would say the 480 and ssd, you will get plenty of performance out of the 480 and the ssd will be a nice boost. Also Vga vs hdmi I would think is a nice difference, though not much if any over dvi outside it carrying sound. Also depending on the price of the 480, you should look into a 570 if its cheaper go for it as it performs the same of a lil better

Yes. If you have the cash to burn, then a new gen card is always a great way to go. The 580 runs cooler, and can always be doubled up later as prices fall. That being said the pricer per FPS increase is not able to be justified easily lol.

As for the HDMI, yes and no. VGA generally struggles with any resolution greater than 1600x1200 and refresh rates higher than 60Hz. So if you new LCD is 1920X1080 and/or 75Hz+ then HDMI is a better option. That being said I find it hard personally to notice a difference.

EDIT: Go for the 480 and get the SSD lol. Best system performance upgrade I bought. GOing from a 470 to a 6970 was nice, but I immediately noticed increased system snappiness (faster boot/shutdown, programs opening near instantaneously, and that elusive 7.9 WEI for my HDD. Just kidding about the last one haha.) I recommend the C300's or the OCZ Vertex 2 line.

480 and SSD. SSDs add a noticable amount of improvment due to the reduced boot and application load time. As others have said have you thought about a 570?

was the 480 I was looking at.

I run at 1600x1200 resolution.

The reason im thinking about going with a SSD + 480 is because my boot harddrive is older than hell.

Yeah, I hadn't seen the 570 on any of the comparison lists I was referencing. I'll have to give it a look.

Snag an SSD man. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the increase in speed in the areas mentioned above. At 1600X1200 your 480 will slice through 95% of all games anyways.

GTX580 is like 10% faster than GTX480..

That being said GTX480 + SSD is the better option for you..

And if you OC that GTX480 you would easily get GTX580's performance..

Just set up a custom fan profile for that GTX480 and you're good to go..

On that 1600x1200 res GTX480 will rape any game you trow at it..

GTX570 is a great card also but it seems that 4Phase power design is not really capable of doing it's job on that card so there are a lot of dead cards via blown VRM's..

GTX480 and GTX580 use 6Phase power design and do not experience that issue..

CHEERS..

This OCZ would be great and comes in under budget at $229.99
(missed this one) OCZ Vertex 2 120gig @ $219.99

OR

This Crucial comes in slightly over budget, but will have better reads, though slower write speeds at $264.99 with free shipping.
