Need New Screen - Res vs. Size

post #1 of 7

My Vizio TV has served my pretty well over the years, but I've grown a little tired of using 1600x900 and am looking for an upgrade now that I have a better gpu. Setting the budget at about $300 for a single monitor, but not sure whether to go for size or higher resolution. My considerations are:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VE276Q-27-Inch-Wide-16/dp/B003UT2C4U/ref=sr_1_17?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1297091797&sr=1-17"]ASUS VE276Q[/ame] 27" monitor

For size, its a little above the budget but looks like it would be nice. My only concern is whether its too big for sitting close to it on 1920x1080. What I mean is, I'm not concerned about the size itself, but will the resolution be high enough for gaming on that size?
The other option is

Samsung 2343BWX

Which many of you are already familiar with at 23" 2048x1152. I've found it new online for $280 shipped, and cheaper refurbed or on ebay.

In your opinion, which would be better for general use and occasional gaming - no photo editing, HD movies, or anything like that. Or if there's something better than either of these, feel free to make suggestions as well. Thanks!

How far do you sit from it? If its under 3 feet go for the smaller one, generally speaking 1080P resolution is high enough, but if you want to pay for the extra pixels get that Samsung.

Ok, I'm generally about 3-3.5 ft from it. Still not sure, I wish I could see an 2048x1152 display next to a 1080 in person to compare and see what the difference actually is.

I've got a 22" Viewsonic LCD LED, 1080p, and it's awesome quite frankly. Just the right size, you don't want too much outside your peripheral vision, otherwise you'll suck at FPS's, haha.

Good point. I've read so many good things about the 2343BWX but they are hard to find since they've been discontinued. And it seems pretty difficult to find a monitor that's >1080p unless its really expensive. hmmm...

Maybe I'll just go with a 1920x1200, as they seem to be slightly easier to find.
