The 5850 is faster than a 6870, while two 6870s crossfired is faster than two 5850s crossfired.

EDIT, I believe the 6870 is the better single card vs the 5850.

6870 beats a 5850 but loses to a 5870 in single card performance

while at crossfire two 6870's beat two 5850's, two 5870's and two gtx 470's..scaling is so epic with the 68** series

This a 5870 outperforms the 6870. But I recommend you get a GTX560 at that price. Much better performance.

5850s are slower than 6870 stock...but depends on whether you are crossfiring in the future or OCing....

a 5850 OCed to 5870 clocks are not that much slower...but heard the 6800 series scale better than 5800 series...

It all depends on what you are looking to do with it

You can use the Sli hack

http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/670810-howto-sli-non-sli-motherboard-gtx5xx.html

The GTX560 is performs much better than 6870/5870. And sli scales better than xfire.
