5970 with two 5870's in Crossfire? Good idea?

Thread Starter
I'm currently running two ATI 5870's in Crossfire (using eyefinity 3 monitor setup. resolution: 5760x1080).

I'm considering the purchase of a 5970 as well, but don't want to stop using the two cards (the current crossfired 5870's) that I paid almost $700.00 for (total).

So my question is: Would there be any real benefit (FPS wise) to putting the (new) 5970 in triple crossfire mode along with my current (2) 5870's? I've heard mixed reviews on the subject. Some have said that crossfiring a card with a lower series number (i.e. 5970 > 5870) actually can make the higher series number card lose performance. I'd hate to make the investment, and gain next to zero increase in performance.

Considering that the 5970 is just two 5870 cores at 5850 clocks (I hope that wasn't too confusing), there really isn't any "degradation" in quality.

You'd have to have a pretty bangin' processor to actually make use of all that GPU power.

don't go 4 card quad-fire really isn't that good for the price. micro stuttering is one of the biggest problem for some people.

Dosen't matter i your CPU has 10Ghz or 3Ghz quad-fire isn't good for the money .You will have better frame rates but micro stuttering and other issue will kill it for you . also the bills from the amount of Watts you will suck from the wall .

like above get 2 6950 and unlock them it will be well worth the price and will run better .

by unlock, do you mean overclock them within catalyst's OVERDRIVE function?

side note: would two 6970's be a better route?

You could go trifire 5870's and see some improvement but with your high-res three monitor setup you want cards with more vram. Adding another 1gb 5870 isn't going to help much because everytime you run out of vram it's gonna choke on the high res setup.

Try to sell your 5870's to someone with a single monitor and get some cards with as much Vram as possible. 2Gb each minimum.
