I suppose I might sound like a total socialist to many of my American friends, but sometimes big national infrastructure initiatives need a lot of government help - consider, for example the Tennessee Valley Authority to bring electricity to under-serviced ( and unprofitable) areas. How about the interstate highway system. If we value the information highway, as much as the asphalt highway, then it makes sense - especially when a government is thinking of stimulating an ailing economy.
I wish my brothers and sisters south of the border the very best and hope for your success - perhaps our government will continue to expand our broadband infrastructure. As someone who's only option is satellite service (expensive and often slow as molasses in January), I'm jealous. You folks ever get tired of President Obama, just send him here.........please?
cheers

Seems like this will increase the unemployment rate quite a bit don't you think?

Great idea....lets go out and get chipped too so our government can better protect and track us *sarcasm off* Personally the less power our government has over us the better off we will be. I mean you just saw what happened to all the banks the government owns now.

Look what happened in egypt, the internet got cut off from going into the country. Mind you, you do know that the internet is not nesicarily an infastructure but more a giant hectic web of nodes ya?

It's still considered infrastructure.

I always find government paranoia in America so very amusing. Nobody said anything about 'owning' ISP's. ISP's would just have to lease it from the government which in no way means that the government is going to limit/control/dictate/kill you. Look what happens in Canada where ISP's are the one's who own the infrastructure and are able to charge whatever they want.

No one said anything about limiting anything. You people really need to loosen up about your government or clean it up. There are just as many worse ones as there are better ones in the world.

And besides, we're talking about Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is not the only way to access the Internet so you don't need to worry about anyone going all China on your Internet access.

Irony: referring to Chinese internet, and being amused by American paranoia in the same paragraph.

Some would tell you that it's your responsibility to be question your government.

A. Learn what a paragraph is and I did not refer to it in the same paragraph. I referred to Canadian Internet.
B. It's my responsibility to question questionable practices. And people are not questioning anything, they just go ZOMG GOVT CONTWOL CONSPIRACIES LETZ GO WALMART BUY GUNZ TO ARM OUSELVES.

FYI, there are no questionable practices here.

Sign me up!!

I can careless if the government is tracking me.
I dont see a really bad con beside taxes, and even then, I would rather the high taxes to better the country then pay a high cost to a single company that only wants to benefit themselves, without rebuilding their own structures

I wish I had a pair of rose-colored glasses.

I'm glad everybody is reading the article....

All this is is the government trying to free up the wireless spectrum, then in turn auctioning it off to the wireless companies (think ATT and Verizon), so that make the infrastructure. Also it is just going to be more 4G cell network so you will still be paying the companies for access.

That's what I gathered from it too. And it wouldn't be hard for them to monitor illicit activities because for any of those services you have to be registered. I guess it might cause a bigger craze for duping, but we do that already (some of us) so I don't see that as a good anti aspect. All in all it would be nice for the Govt to help us out, especially if it gives us some money back. I don't believe it will be that high of figures, but any + for financial and taking care of a problem is better than nothing.
