[Anandtech] Obama Reveals National Wi-Fi Plans, Claims it Will Cut Deficit by $10B US - Page 8

$10 billion dollars is a drop in the bucket for the national deficit which is 14,158 billion dollars, or 14+ trillion dollars.

Also, as others have said, I don't see this being able to cover everyone anytime soon, the nation has too much area to cover.

For economically challenged residents, fine... But I will stick to paying for my private service.

No, no, no, no! Wi-Fi is a bad idea! Wi-Fi was made for the home user, not providing; there's no real QoS which means everyone just ends up fighting for every bit. Why do you think AT&T, Sprint, etc aren't using Wi-Fi?

This is going to fail. Hasn't the USA already tried a few city wide Wi-Fi networks? How did those do? Oh yeah, they all failed. Unless they are doing something different, you can be sure it won't work well. (By the way, I do know that most of those projects were mesh, but my point is still mostly valid. )

I understand what the government is thinking, Wi-Fi seems to have a low start up cost. However, in the long term it'll cost you more.

At least my tax dollars won't be wasted in this failure (Canadian FTW).

Now, let's think positive now. Here's some ideas that might work out well.

1. Make it legally required for ALL new Wi-Fi routers to have a self-healing mesh firmware that are sold in the USA. Add backbone routers at key points to backhaul data.
2. Use 4G technologies and basically make it a "free" provider.
3. Stay wired. Really, wireless is great and all but you should first focus on having a good landlines connection. They tried to skip out on landlines in the Middle East and look at how well that's working; sure they have a connection, but not very fast or usable (compared to here). I would really like to see government owned fiber lines in the ground.
