1090T how hot is to hot

Thread Starter
I can run stable @ 4.2 but when i run prime95 i'll hit temps close to 60C in nothing but prime to do i get near this. Convertx2dvd i hit about 52ish and when gaming i stay around 45-48 . I got a 30 dollar cool master N520 cooler. Guess my question is is it worth spending another 50 bucks on a cooler to drop my temps a few degrees, I don't think this chip can do much more than 4.2 stable anyways so not sure.

Yeah, the cooler is the fault of your high temperatures. And your temps are fine, just a tad high. Personally I would never let an AMD chip hit higher than 65c, that's my comfort zone.

So you're perfectly fine until you get the money to drop on a new cooler, no worries.

Stability will decrease dramatically past 55C. These chips love the cool.

well i just bought the cooler yesterday, so question is, is it worth taking it back and spending another 50 to get the H50? Not worried about the cost but if it's only gonna drop me 3-4C don't see the point

That's not true at all, period. Who told you that? AMD even says the highest they'd let their chips hit before degration/etc is 62c.

I would. And it won't just be 3-4C, compared to the cooler you have now the temps should have an increase of anywhere from 7-10c, depending of course on your voltage and multiplier

Stick with what you have as long as your not doing anything extremely taxing for hours on end you will be fine. I you do use 100% cpu usage for hours on end you might want a better cooler but unless your folding or rendering or encoding constantly you will be fine.

Thats a great CPU that lets you get to Prime 95 Stable at 4.2GHz and 60c on such a budget Cooler.

For air as long as you keep below 60c and 1.55v then you are fine.

Decent water cooling will get you a bit further.

hes right...most phenom cpu gets unstable at high overclock cpu and cpu-nb overclock with temps passing 55c. keeping it under 55c on full load helps with a better chance of stabilizing the overclock. =)

55C is the MAX you want any Phenom/Athlon II running at, it's the known "temperature wall" as your chip won't perform very well any hotter than that due to AMD's fab tech. But it's also why there is no cold bug with AMD chips.

Keep in mid that during Summer you will get higher temps if you plan to keep it for long.
