your looking at from your own personal perspective. what about the person who owns a core2duo. should he buy the 980x for $1000 when he can get a 990x for the same price?

intel and amd are constantly improving on current processor specs and designs. thats how the chip industry works.

not everyone is a rich enthusiast who has to have the best. for some people the 990x is a good upgrade path from there current setup.

Then just place the new chips under the 980x name.

Just like the Q6600 G0.

I rest my case.

lol. what case is that? and why would they continue to call it the 980x?

your talking about stepping revisions. which has absolutely nothing to do with clock speed and tdp. and this is exactly what makes the 990x different from the 980x. the fact that it has a higher operating frequency at the same tdp.

Maybe they will keep both the 980X and the 990x and reduce the price of the 980X....

unlikely. intel is not known for reducing prices =[

take the i7-975 for example $1,049.99
the 980x is $999.99

it would make sense to reduce prices of the previous chip. but thats intel for you.

yeah they make the older X cpu's higher priced I guess because they are not making them anymore.

I have a early 980x that takes 1.5v for 4.4ghz. I'm sure it's just like going from 920/930/950. They just are improving the chips. once the 990x is out the 980x will be replaced by it. I'm sure that it will go up about 300-500mhz with the same volts as a 980x. Just my 2c.
