Installing Chipset Drivers in Ubuntu?

Thread Starter
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my sig rig so I can start folding bigadv, and now for the life of me I can't figure out how to install my motherboard's chipset drivers. I checked my motherboard's website and there are no linux drivers for my motherboard, so does that mean I don't need them...I really have no idea?

I'm sorry, but I'm completely new to Linux and I have no idea what I'm doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

When I first install windows I have to tell it to install my motherboard's chipset drivers (SB750), so I just assumed I had to do the same on Linux.

So you're telling me that they're already installed? If so, then that's great and I love Linux already smile.gif

a lot of the drivers in linux, called "modules" are compiled directly into the kernel or exist as loadable modules. chances are it is already loaded and installed.

If can use your Linux box chances are everything is peachy. For example, I have an AMD rig with SB710 and the kernel modules for that are pre-compiled into the OS.

Even on Windows, I don't think you need to install AMD chipset drivers? I never did and it works just fine.

No, you don't need to "install" chipset drivers; they're already included with and kept up to date via the Linux kernel.

I suspect you will find more pleasant surprises than unpleasant ones, but overall you are right: it will take getting used to. Especially if you are accustomed to Windows, or haven't ever used anything else extensively. That said, there's a huge community standing by to help. smile.gif
