I spent a good year swapping around and trying every distro I could get my hands on.

I settled on Arch I think it's the best as it comes with almost nothing and you can customize it to your liking. It is hard at first but everything is really well documented and the community is the best in terms of helpfulness and general technical ability. I learned more about how Linux works by using Arch than any other distro. Also the AUR is great for finding unsupported drivers, packages etc.

As long as you have NTFS-3g (or comparable) installed you can read ntfs windows partitions. The name of the package for FAT is escaping me but it is available. Many distros like Ubuntu or mint have it pre-installed. I never had a problem with this when I was dual booting.

sticky thread about distros...

but really any distro will do... ubuntu/mint for noobs, mint is probably better... or you could have fun with something like #! ive been really enjoying it lately, but its not as noob friendly as ubuntu/mint

OR you could run something more main stream enterprise style like opensuse or fedora... which are basically SLED and RHEL
Kinda meh now...

Thread Starter
Thanks for the posts everyone. It looks like I'm going to go with Arch, but I probably won't start installing OS's 'til tomorrow or the next day, so if anyone has anymore ideas, I'll still look at them until then, so keep posting.

Arch? For someone that knows nothing about Linux. Ballsy if you ask me. Hope you don't get discouraged.

Linux Mint i find is more friendly to new members and has less setup work whilst being compatible with Ubuntu (except for Mint Debian)

I'd wish you luck with Arch as well.
I've been casually toying with Linux since around 2008 and the installer was annoying/PITA enough to abandon it half way through..

I think arch's difficulty has been overblown. It is not as easy as ubuntu but any problem you run into is completely explained with 30 seconds of wiki searching. The installer is complex but the beginners guide explains the options very well and most of it is not alien to someone who is computer savy.

It is more time consuming but if your goal is to learn linux you will really learn it.

Just be sure to follow the beginners guide if it is your first time.
