OK so I think $250-280 max will be my limit. So the 6970 is out. Cheapest one I found is XFX $359. Found a Sapphire HD 6950 on newegg for $276.

So lets say I wanted to find the Nvidia equivalent to the Sapphire Radeon hd6950. Keeping around the same price point(no higher than 280).

The only card that comes close to a 6950 (2GB Version) around 280 is the 6950 1gb and the 560 ti. The 6950 1gb version offer the same performance as the 2gb version for $250ish. The 560ti retail at 250ish as well but slightly slower than a 6950 depending on games. Your best bet at $280 is a 6950 2bg version, unlock the shaders and you'll get the same performance as a 6970 for $80-$100 less.

The 6950 doesn't really "offer" the same performance, at higher resolutions. But yeah, I'd say the 6950 is your best bet. The 2GB RAM overall makes it more future proof in my opinion, who knows when 1GB might be too little?

Sorry for the lame question but how do I tell if it is a reference card? It does have to be a ref card in order to do the flash right?

Yes, you need a reference card to unlock the shader. All the card listed on the Amazon link are reference cards. I think, the only card that is not reference at the moment is MSI Twin Frozr.

The only NON reference card that can be unlock is the Powercolor PCS++ 6950. Retail goes for $305. I don't think it's out yet but the overclock potential on this card is crazy.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/P...PCS_Plus_Plus/ There's a drop down list on the bottom left. You'll see the results of different benchmarks.

Amazon

Both have the same model number 100312SR. Does the R mean reference? Can someone please verify if these cards are the reference cards?

Yes, they're both reference model. BTW the card is about 10.5 inches, make sure your case can fit it.
