FreeRAM XP Pro not showing all RAM.

I just upgraded from 4GB to 8GB and the program FreeRAM XP Pro is still only acknowledging 4GB. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall or something?

Are you running 32bit or 64bit? A 32bit OS can only address a maximum of 4GB of memory.

64bit. The "CPU Meter" sidebar app I'm running can see that I have 8GB, so I'm wondering why this program can't. If it's because ALL 32bit programs can only see 4GB, then that's why.

I used to use that program, it helped manage my memory a little better, I was playing a MMO with a lot of third party add ons and there was some horrible memory leaks. On XP Pro though.

I dont know the program but it sounds to me like it's designed for WinXP 32-bit and you're trying to use it on W7 64-bit? That's prolly the problem? tongue.gif

No, it just has "XP" in its name.

A couple things here...

According to the publishers website, Win 7 and Vista are not supported. They only acknowledge support up to XP. According to their FAQ, if your version of Windows is not specifically listed, it is not supported.

Your pc has 8GB of RAM, why on earth are you trying to use this program??? You previously had 4GB which was sufficient for most all tasks except for Virtual Machines or some workstation duties (CAD/CAM/Heavy Photo Editing/etc). I have no doubt that this program actually slowed your system down by moving data to the Page File unecessarily, as well as performed other wasteful cpu cycle consuming work such as "RAM Compression". These programs were useful back in the days when 256MB of RAM was all your PC could handle. Today, especially with your system, its just wasting CPU clock cycles. It is counter productive to your system. Letting your machine take advantage of all the installed RAM, provided you have enough (and you do), will be exponentially faster than any "Virtual RAM Software".

RAM is 10x faster than your hard-drive. These programs move data from RAM to the HDD to free up more RAM. But when your PC needs that data, it must retrieve it from the HDD, not the uber-fast RAM.

It never slowed my system down, it only runs clock cycles when it's performing an operation, like freeing RAM when I manually perform the task "Free RAM". If you've read the FAQ already you know this.

Never mind "Why I'm trying to use it" , just help me figure out "Why won't it acknowledge 8GB" like I asked.
