Replacing CM Storm Scout fans

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

The temps I am getting here in Aus are pretty terrible, and as such I can't overclock my 955

I'm going to be buying a Noctua D-14, but I thought it might be an idea to replace the 3 pre-existing fans in my Storm Scout, and add two on the window while I'm at it.

What fans would you recommend? I will need 4x120mm and 1x140mm fans.

Also, how should I configure these fans? Currently I have my case as stock, with the front fan as intake, and the top and back fans as exhaust. I would do the same with the replacement fans, but what about the sidepanel?

Thanks in advance,
LAF

CM r4's are great fans to replace the stock fans with. Plus you can get them in red/greeen/blue so whatever your taste is, get those. You dont need to get 140mm, you can get all 120mm and they will fit. The scout has mountiing on the 140mm fan spots for either the 140 or 120.

AS for intake/exhaust, usually front intake, back exhaust, side intake, top exhaust but with the pressure that you are putting inside your case you could switch it all around and it wouldnt matter. the whole hot air rising only works when you dont have 5 fans telling the air(weather cold or hot air) exactly where to go.

Scythe Gentle Typhoons are really quite and push alot of air, if you're looking for LED fans CM R4 are perhaps the best in that category.

You could retain your current air-flow config, you should use the side-panel fan to push air into the case as all the GFX exhaust goes out of the back and there's nothing to pull out of the case.

I'm not too concerned on LED's, silence, anything like that.

I'd just like some good fans without them being too pricey

Thanks for the quick responses guys

EDIT: I couldn't see the R4's, this is where I'll be buying from, are they under a different name? http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ex&cPath=9_215

Also, which rpm for the Scythe GT's if I go for them? http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ex&cPath=9_247

EDIT 2: If I went LED I'd want Blue, because the red fans really clash with the blue lights on my mobo

Scythe Gentle Typhoons are def good fans, i personally like the CM R4's for the amount of air they move.

EDIT:These are the R4's.

Same case as me, they do get pretty toasty,

I just scored the case with a thermaltake bigwater kit, screwed the dual 120 to the side and the single 120 to the back, Thermal issue solved

i go intake at the back side and front and exhaust at the top, its not what i had initially but sucking hot air through the rear radiator made my cpu hotter rather than cooler :/

im no fan guru, the CM R4 do look like a nice fan

Hrm, well I think I'll go with the R4's, purely because they're cheaper, unless anyone else has any suggestions?

I'll be back in a few weeks asking for help rewiring my case

While I'm at it, I hear the Noctua fans are good, but is there a better option which is more aesthetically pleasing? They're so ugly

I have a case window, so I'm looking into it all the time. Which is why I need a new sound card, this one has a bright green "Razer" light on the top edge

Would have thaught a nice light on your sound card would look nice through a window? Nothing a piece of insulation tape of your colour choice wont fix, or you could give it to me?

or if its the colour.. get creative with a soldering iron and some 7 colour changing led's risky of course,

Noiseblocker PK3 to replace the top fan. That stock top fan moves hardly any air. The PK3 moves a (legit) 90+cfm and makes nothing more than a light whooshing noise.

Any ~1800+ rpm fan placed on the side window makes a terrible noise, due to the way the slats are cut.

The Aerocooler 140mm Shark fans also work great and are a cheaper alternative to the PK3, though they move slightly less air.

I have a PK3 for top exhaust, an R4 running at 75% for a side intake, an R4 running at 50% for rear exhaust, and a 140mm Shark for front intake. I put the stock top fan as an intake in the drive bays.

Haha, I'll happily sell it to you when I get a new one

It'd look fine, but as it is I've already got red LED fans and blue mobo lights.

Hrm, ok, so a PK3 over the R4 for a top fan?

This is what I've got so far:

R4 120's for everything, OR R4's for everything with PK3 for top fan.

Will I need to buy a fan controller for this? :S I just have them all at 100% now, as I said, noise is no issue. I am always listening to music or gaming so I don't notice it.

EDIT: No PK3 on the PCCG site, unless it has a different name. This is getting confusing now
