Bad Company 2 Performance Nightmare

Thread Starter
Hey everyone.

I bought BC2 during the Christmas steam sale and have been trying to get it to run smoothly since then.

With everything on high except shadows which are on low and at 1920 x 1080 with no AA, AF, HBAO, and Vsync off I only average around 30 fps. Is this about what I should expect for my rig? When I lower the settings I only get around 10 extra fps...

Specs:
crossfire 4850s at 675/1100 on 11.1 cats
e7400 at 3.58ghz
4gb ram
windows 7 64bit

This may be all in my head, but when I run it in DX9 it seems to play much more smoothly but FRAPS records the exact same fps.

Any help or suggestions is appreciated. And I know there are a thousand threads about BC2 performance. I've read most of them and googled for hours and still can't figure out what's wrong.

I get around the same FPS on MP at these settings, both CPU and GPU seems to be at full load most of the time, annoying stutters on MP sometimes (Destruction 2.0 / explosions etc), changing the settings barely effects my fps, I think it's the dual core..

Code:
texture high
detail medium
effects medium
shadows low
hbao off
4xAA
16xAF
DX10

Fraps will cap your FPS at 30, if your having issues with it staying around 30 turn fraps off, although your 30ish fps is pretty low for your system.

Latest drivers installed?
do you have any settings set in your Catalyst control center?
close any programs you may be running with the game.

BFBC2 uses allot of cpu processing, it's the only game I play that when checking cpu temps after I see high temps on all 6 physical cores. Most games I play (warhead, metro2033, etc) cpu temps never get over 50c, but with BFBC2 they will be 57,65,58,64,55,64.

I would recommend a quad cpu for BFBC2.

I have a GTS 450 & run this game at Low Settings @ 1600 X 900 and I get 120 FPS...

It doesn't make sense to play a game in 1920 X 1080 online on Med or High settings, it will only slow you down unless you have a stellar rig...

Offline is fine, I can play Medium settings in 1920X1080 and get 60 FPS on my GTS 450..

I don't believe in overkill, that's why I bought the GTS 450 rather than the GTX 460..

All newer games should be used with a Quad Core CPU, dual core is not strong enough for Bad Company 2, it's a very intense game on a CPU..
(Especially Crysis & the new Crysis coming out!)

+1 for QuadCore

You will need a QuadCore. I ran it on E8400, it did not do well even overclocked. You need overclocked Q6xxx or Q9xxx series for better performance.

Even a GTX 460 has problems running it at max. Honestly, Go with your Current res, and Medium Settings, trust me, you'll barely notice the difference. Google for some comparison images if you want, High pretty much just drops the FPS by alot.

Edit: Also, I ran this game on my GTS 250 E-Green (Underclocked from Standard ones) on 1920x1080 Res on Med in Multiplayer, FPS was well playable with my Sig Rig, but not worthy to record on Fraps.

I run the game with my sig rig at 1920x1080 and I normally get about 45fps+ on max settings with no AA.
The game is not so hard to run, I run with my current config,
everything on high dx10 expect AA/AF/HBAO.
Average 50 FPS.

You are probably CPU limited for the game.

This.

My old E8400 was clocked at 4.3ghz and I still only averaged 35fps online with a 5850.

Upon upgrading to this i5 I get 60fps constantly.
