OCing my 9800GX2s - Page 2

Doesn't this post belong in the NIVIDA section? I don't really care but that's what happened to my last post about GX2 temps, it got moved to the NIVIDA section. I am sure it was Chris who pointed it out.

Well, it has to do with overclocking specifically for folding, not just temps. Also, would an OC on my CPU help at all?

im back! you were on the homepage I have mine at 730 core, 1200 mem and 1850 shader. that seems to be a good balance for gaming but its HOT and I mean HOT, you might be able to bring the shader up to 2000 but I havnt managed it yet, you would obviously need to bring the core and mem down though. what CPU are you using?

My post was also about folding temps. I reported on how much a difference taking the shroud off (which you report you have done) made. I can fold with shaders in the 1720 range at 82C (75F ambient) and was told I am posting in the wrong spot. Go figure.Others responded on how "behind the times" I was to be still using the GX2 for folding. I say to each his own.

The GX2 is still a beast card for folding. For $100 and 12k ppd, its hard to beat. It does chew power though.

I have the memory bumped down quite a way on my 450's and I get some of the highest PPD on OCN with them.

It's all about shaders, it doesn't matter how slow your memory is clocked, it will always be quick enough to keep up with the shaders. The lower the better; lower clock = lower mem temps, which keep the rest of the card cool

As I said, I don't think the temps mean much. Would a voltmod allow me to get it higher? I mean, I already have 60/70s temps at load. And I love my GX2s. What kind of GX2s do ya'll have? XFX or EVGA (or others...) Mine is the XFX XXX edition, so I'm pretty sure it's OCed a bit. It gets to 1890 shaders, but if I fold on it the computer locks up. I feel like with a voltmod I might be able to get the shaders higher.

The manufacture of my GX2 is unknown. The person I bought it from sold it with an EVGA cover but said he bought it DOA and uncovered. Unit was baked, sold to me and has folded quite a bit. With that cover on temps were high and uneven from side to side, now it is a 1720 shaders card at 82C both sides.

i have been playing with my clocks on my 9800gx2 and have noticed very very little help with overclocking memory .. gpu does help some but it might be better to under clock thse two to have the shaders have more room to overclock...
