AM GPU bottlenecking question

Thread Starter
I am wondering if the EVGA GTX 465 will cause a bottleneck using a Phenom II x2 555 BE cpu. I feel stupid asking this because I should have considered this before purchasing the the graphics card.

not really, but you could try to unlock that x2 555 to a quad core, if you Mobo supports it (usually Asus Msi etc. have a bios feature or a utility that's used in windows )

I tried the that already I can unlock the cpu, but only the third core I could not get it stable enough. Unless I was doing something wrong I am new to the whole unlocking thing. I also got it overclocked to a stable 4.3 GHz

Also could you use AMD overdrive to unlock? Just curious.

Core unlocking is only do-able in your BIOS and only if your motherboard supports it.

Also, I wouldn't try unlocking the 4th core because your motherboard only uses a 4+1 power phase design. A triple core CPU on a 4+1 should be fine but quad core, not so much.

I have the unlocked the cpu to a x3 and I ran prime95 for about an hour with no errors. And could you explain what you mean by a 4+1 power phase design?

Prime95 for an hour is a pretty short amount of time for stress testing. From what I've read, you oughta run about 6+ hours of Prime95 or 2 and a half hours of OCCT at least. I used the OCCT method and haven't had any issues.

I'm sure some other people can explain it a lot better but it's got to do with how your VRM works. I don't think 8+1/2 is a necessity but highly recommended on 125W TDP processors(Quad/Hexa cores for AMD). 6+1 may be sufficient but try to stay away from 4+1 on the 125W processors.

Don't worry about all the questions. We were all new to OCing once. I would even argue I still am new.

I've never OCed a nVidia GPU, never even owned one, but here's a thread that should help: http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/5926...cking-faq.html
Also, I've read you can unlock the 465 and essentially turn it into a 470 though I have no idea how to. I would imagine you could find out how from searching the site, or even Google, for it.
