YES, companies do hire hackers to help them find security holes in their software. Geo first hacked the PS3, released the tools online, while at the same time telling Sony "lulz hire me?" You honestly think a company would hire someone that just released their security hole worldwide? Had Geo approached Sony BEFORE releasing the hack, and said "Sony, I found a major security hole in the PS3 that allows this and this. I am willing to work with you to patch this security hole before others discover it," Sony MORE THAN LIKELY would have hired him.

At this point, Google certainly wouldn't, and I doubt any other company would. I'm willing to bet any company would reject wanting to hire this prick out of concern that if he ever finds a security hole in their software, he'll disclose it to a competitor for money.
This hack is going to give him plenty of street cred in Silicon Valley. Have you ever heard of Sean Parker? The guy was arrested for hacking when he was 16, got sued out the wazoo by the RIAA for copyright infringement for running Napster, and he's now worth 3.5 Billion dollars. I guess hacking and getting sued for copyright infringement didn't hurt his career too much.

I'm sure Geohot will have plenty of career opportunities in the tech world after this case. I don't know know why you think they would think he would sell their security hole for money when he's shown no concern for any monetary gain. If he tried to get a job by offering Sony the security hole as you suggested, wouldn't that show more that he is greedy and could be bought by the highest bidder?

No one in that world will really give a crap about what Sony thinks of the guy when the majority of them were hackers when starting out their careers in the first place.

What you, I, or GeoHot thinks is "fine" is completely irrelevant to the case.

Now as I always like to say...if you don't like this harsh fact of life, quit whining about it on the internet and write your Congressional representatives. They are the only ones who can change this...no one on OCN or any other forum can do anything but bicker pointlessly about it and post ridiculous, not clever at all, and increasingly of poor quality photos with *cough* "amusing" captions.

Yeah...no. That didn't work out so well for that music-downloading chick, did it. And she wasn't the arrogant jackass that GeoHot clearly is! No, Sony isn't going to give an inch on this just because there are a bunch of sympathetic geeks on the internet, and an army of wannabe-PS3-pirates right behind them. Nor should they; they hold the legal high ground free and clear.

Actually, legally yes. The court decision legalizing jailbreaking was specific to phones, it did not create an exclusion for consoles.

And I sure wish people would stop using the word "jailbreak" with consoles. It's irritating...not a single person ever used "jailbreak" and "PS3" in the same sentence, until the court legalized jailbreaking iPhones. And suddenly the brilliant interwebs wanted to apply that as some sort of universal precedent allowing DMCA runarounds on every device ever created. Augh! It doesn't work that way, folks. I hate the DMCA too, but geez...get a grip.

Well of course they can do that. Criminals convicted of armed robbery generally aren't allowed to have a gun anymore...child molestors can't live within X distance from a school...you get the idea. There are plenty of precedents to impose restrictions on the tools one used to perpetuate your crime.

And I sure wish people would learn what the First Amendment actually covers. Admittedly it can be murky because of how it has been grossly misapplied to so many things over the years...but still, how one could draw a line from this idea to "violates freedom of speech" is beyond me...

A for effort?

Decent lyrics, decent delivery, very unconvincing voice and diction, unpleasant ego grandstanding.

Didn't see that coming though.

This kid is a genius, and a true hacker.
Jailbreak, unlock, PS3 hack
He is doing it for the public (such as us) in order to save money and play for free.
It is a shame that some people thinks he is an immature brat.

This guy is trying to get himself killed!

Either that, or Sony will hire him to rap commercials for the PSP.

I would appreciate some constructive criticism here, I know my ideas are probably idealistic, but you have to listen to the words of the rap. "Exhibit this" as in, make this an exhibit in your court case. The terms Sony wanted (essentially anything connected to this in any way at all) would include this and therefore be an exhibit that the jury would have access to.

All he needs to do is prove he needs to run his own software code to be sure Sony isn't violating any privacy, security or information laws. Yeah they can say they don't, won't or have not but how would we ever know? Build a case based on this idea, convince the judge that these companies are getting very invasive and people deserve to know what their consoles are actually doing as they are being done.
Sony isn't violating any laws. They aren't hacking him back. They aren't getting better security (he calls them out on this).

"Those that can’t do bring suits
Cry to your Uncle Sam to settle disputes
Thought you’d tackle this with a little more tact"

They are going to Uncle Sam, nothing that GeoHot can legally to block that. Now I agree that he can still make a case on how invasive Sony is being. If you post the code online they will request info on you, and Sony even talked to a judge about getting IP's and info on every youtube commenter that commented on the videos, but fortunately it was denied.

I agree it may not work, but it is far more valid strategy than just sitting there and getting sued. And Sony does have the high legal ground on the basis he broke their security. They are trying to insinuate that he single handedly is responsible for piracy on the PS3 and stuff which is absurd, but the basis that he provided the code is true.

Also, GeoHot will have more of a public standing than music pirating. Americans love the "David and Goliath" story. Stealing music is a clear right and wrong, so the public really didn't side with her much, but breaking a code to get a feature that Sony disabled after people bought the system (The 'other operating system' feature) Sounds like a noble cause.

GeoHot is an arrogant *******, but it is getting him attention. And Sony can't really punish him more because he released a stupid rap video, so I say it was worth a shot by GeoHot.
