This is why GeoHot is trying to change, and if he keeps his case going and Sony keeps getting this much bad press, he may just win this and soon jailbreaking be allowed on PS3 as it should be, like the iPhone.

I actually think this will help GeoHot, and I think he knows it.

GeoHot is known as extremely arrogant, but the more attention he gets here the better, if he can make Sony look bad enough they may just drop the case instead of continuing to get negative attention.

Sony is also trying to get legal access to everything GeoHot has produced in this case. I don't know the fine details here but that is what he refers to at the end with "Exhibit this in the courtroom, go on do it, I dare you". He is making somewhat of a mockery of the legal grounds Sony is trying to use against him and if Sony gets what they want then this will be a legal exhibit in the case, which will be ridiculous. Plus if a Jury sees this video they won't think GeoHot is being mean to poor little Sony, they will see GeoHot as a cocky kid who is fighting against what he sees as "the man", this 'freedom fighter' image may help him over the "hacker" image Sony would try to put on him.

TL;DR: I think this was a planned, strategic move by GeoHot. But I easily could be wrong.
I agree, GeoHot is also extremely smart, he knows what he doing. To be honest, i think he took a great degree in researching the legal stuff behind this before he released his work. I think he knows exactly what hes doing from the start, I think he knew Sony would soon be after him.

This video is just a huge slap in the face to Sony, he knows Sony might show this in court if things fall through. I am all for GeoHot and Sony rotting in their own pit of snakes. They are trying to fight a case that Apple lost. I really dont know why they are wasting their time.

The university where my brother study, had to hack a few PS3 to get the linux back running, so they could run algoritems on them, after someone decided to upgrade the firmware and lock them away from the linux system.

Also I think what he did was fine. As long as he doesn't use it to bypass and do bad things over the PSN, I don't see the harm. Even when he publish how to hack the PS3.
In the legal world, the ends do not justify the means. You are not allowed to steal food just because your children are starving; stealing is against the law. And you are not allowed to break the copy protection mechanisms on a PS3, even though that's the only way to get Linux running on it; the DMCA makes breaking copy protection illegal. What you, I, or GeoHot thinks is "fine" is completely irrelevant to the case.

Now as I always like to say...if you don't like this harsh fact of life, quit whining about it on the internet and write your Congressional representatives. They are the only ones who can change this...no one on OCN or any other forum can do anything but bicker pointlessly about it and post ridiculous, not clever at all, and increasingly of poor quality photos with *cough* "amusing" captions.

Yeah...no. That didn't work out so well for that music-downloading chick, did it. And she wasn't the arrogant jackass that GeoHot clearly is! No, Sony isn't going to give an inch on this just because there are a bunch of sympathetic geeks on the internet, and an army of wannabe-PS3-pirates right behind them. Nor should they; they hold the legal high ground free and clear.

Actually, legally yes. The court decision legalizing jailbreaking was specific to phones, it did not create an exclusion for consoles.

And I sure wish people would stop using the word "jailbreak" with consoles. It's irritating...not a single person ever used "jailbreak" and "PS3" in the same sentence, until the court legalized jailbreaking iPhones. And suddenly the brilliant interwebs wanted to apply that as some sort of universal precedent allowing DMCA runarounds on every device ever created. Augh! It doesn't work that way, folks. I hate the DMCA too, but geez...get a grip.

Well of course they can do that. Criminals convicted of armed robbery generally aren't allowed to have a gun anymore...child molestors can't live within X distance from a school...you get the idea. There are plenty of precedents to impose restrictions on the tools one used to perpetuate your crime.

And I sure wish people would learn what the First Amendment actually covers. Admittedly it can be murky because of how it has been grossly misapplied to so many things over the years...but still, how one could draw a line from this idea to "violates freedom of speech" is beyond me...

Yea, kind of reminds me of a quote I once heard. "Worlds dumbest smart guy." Think of what he could have done if he actually applied his knowledge in a positive manner.

Civil case = A SURE JUDGMENT AGAINST HIM...

The boy doesn't even have a prayer in Civil Court against Sony, not even...

Being flagrant about it will only have Sony wanting to do more damage to him...

He should cease & desist, instead his mouth is calling for blows....

Sony will not only kill him in Civil court but they will also ostracize the poor kid from the professional world, like forever...

With a mark against you for hacking, your professional career is finished...

In debt up to his eyeballs, his credit will be ruined forever, and he won't be able to get a professional job... That's what I call ostracized from the game....

It's sad that corporations have this much power, and maybe Sony is going out of their way to make this kid an example of how they won't tolerate people tampering with their machines in any way, nevertheless, the kid ought to quit before things get even more ugly...

If I was this kid I'd just shut up and take it like a man, because to be honest, there is nothing he can do.... No amount of Fans for this kid is going to help him in court..

I can't watch the video atm but if this kid was half as smart as he thinks he is, this could all be dealt with very swiftly and quietly.
All he needs to do is prove he needs to run his own software code to be sure Sony isn't violating any privacy, security or information laws. Yeah they can say they don't, won't or have not but how would we ever know? Build a case based on this idea, convince the judge that these companies are getting very invasive and people deserve to know what their consoles are actually doing as they are being done.

Are you joking? I hope you are, Company's that rival Sony would LOVE TO SCOOP this guy up in a heartbeat, one single kid took down PS3 defenses and is so far holding strong against it. Hes a hero so to say in the PS3 community.

I don't know why people think GeoHot is gonna get completely smashed in this case, when he has already in ways beat Sony on some of their bluffs against him. He is no where close to down and out and cease and desist. If he did that Sony would win right then and there, this video shows he is not willing nor has any close desire to do so. Sorry my friend, that is the coward way out. That may fly in a different case, but Geo has some fighting chance.
