I don't know what prices for you are like but Athlon II's are generally less expensive than Phenom II's. Power consumption of the Athlon II is also slightly lower idle (I'd estimate around 10W diff) and probably considerably lower at full load. Sure, Phenom II's are faster in certain tasks but unless you're gaming or doing CPU intensive tasks on your HTPC, I don't really see much need for it.
It seemed like they were close in terms of $.. about 20-50 apart. I do see slight differences in the idle and load power consumption but didn't think that the ~5W made a whole bit of difference. In the overall picture of it, I want to be sure that this system is capable of running the RAID functions/tuner card/graphics card all at once. Possibly recording a couple of shows while I blast a blu-ray on the screen... I just don't want to under-cut the systems ability.

Thanks for the info. I just read some reviews and it seemed like a lot of people were stating that the card was quiet as a PRO. One worry I have with the Sapphire card is that it looks like the fan sticks out a little too much to take only one pcie slot? On the board I have selected I would need to use the pcie 1x slot just below the pcie 16x slot. Since you have one, do you have any spacial issues?

Thanks!

Meh, even an Athlon II X2 would be enough for all those. There's a reason Atom/ION and Zacate are pretty popular for HTPC use.

Some reviews from Newegg for the 1GB version (but I think the HSF would be the same in both).

morda: Very noisy. The tiny fan on this card is very loud and runs at 50% at idle just showing a Windows desktop even though the GPU temperature is only 39C. If you put any load on the card it starts screaming like a mini jet engine on takeoff. I put it in my media center PC and the fan on the card is louder than the rest om my computer.

Waddly Hobbins: -Loud fan. The fan on this is very small and runs at high rpm. It is not CRAZY loud but it is much louder than the rest of the fans in my case and I have 7 fans plus the one on my CPU heat sink. The fan runs at 50% even when idle.

What is loud to me may be quiet to you, however. My computer sits about a foot and a half away from my ear on my desk. If your computer sits somewhere else, the sound may be a non-issue.
The Sapphire is definitely dual-slot, though. I didn't need the PCIe x1 slot, though, so I didn't really care. In your case, you may need to take a gamble as I'm not aware of any other single-slot HD 5670.

That's why I was going to go with the XFX card, it is single slot and has that tiny fan. It is a 512MB card and the stats show it runs pretty cool.. I think I might be able to pull the fan off and put on some replacement heat spreaders on instead of the fan? Might make things quieter although a little hotter...

Or, here is a different card I have found, I only worry abut the added height. Anyone have thoughts on that card?

Well that is just annoying... I doubt I am going to find a slim/sleek looking case that can support the additional height that card needs. I will keep looking for a good alternative. I may have to just suck it up for the noise...

Does anyone have a good recommendation on a card that is (True) Single-Slot PCIe and quiet that I can put in this HTPC system?

Curious, why the HD 5670? Even the HD 5570 would work just as well and those are both low-profile and single-slot. Perhaps something like this would work.

I like it. I just did a quick search and looked for the top-end single slot ATI card and found the 5670 and the 5770. Just seemed like the 5670 produces less heat and the 5770 didn't have too much of a performance increase to warrant searching for one that would fit as a true single slot card.

I suppose that the 5570 is a good line of card? Has anyone here had a problem with heat or performance during playback with this card?

There is also a 2GB Version for sale. It has twice the memory which might help with decode/encode of audio/video data... but it looks like the memory clock is a bit slower on that model. If this is a good card, any suggestions about which model to go for?

I think I've also heard that someone said they could do a window in window while watching a movie/tv... I'd like to do this seamlessly while watching two different tv shows/videos.

There's no point in having that much video memory. Even 512MB is good enough for BD PiP. HD 5570 is the lowest card that would give you all the post processing options available on higher end cards. In terms of 3D gaming performance, it's slower than a 9600 GT (but faster than 9500 GT) while the HD 5670 is around 9800 GT level. The HD 5770 is slightly better than 9800 GTX+/GTS 250, I believe.

cwinchell,

Seems like you have a flexible budget for a premium HTPC.

With all the extra add-on cards and other bells and whistles, consider an ATX-size case for the sake of ventilation. If not, a large microATX case like Silverstone's SG06 is badass (lockable, front swappable hard drives)

As stated before, the AMD dualcores will typically have a lower idle/load temp and higher clockspeed than similarly priced quadcores (3ghz dualcore vs 2.6ghz quadcore, etc).
Even when comparing L2/L3 cache size, I dont see it being a performance issue for HD playback and then some.
Since your HTPC will be doing alot of multitasking while watching media, might as well go quadcore.

check out Anandtech's cpu benchmarks for a thorough comparison chart between any chip.

The stock cpu cooler will be fine, but a popular and proven upgrade is the
Scythe Big Shuriken.
It's basically silent. Just keep in mind the low-profile design will likely block tall ram sticks in the first 2 memory slots.

Video cards? ATI 5450 or higher.
Only issue with ATI cards, one minor flaw
I can confirm this. Not a big deal, only happens when fast-forwarding/rewinding/jumping around clips. It'll auto-correct itself in a second or two.

From what i understand, the 5XXX series ATI cards do not support hd-3D. You will have to move up to the 6XXX+ series if u want/need that from ATI.

If youre choosing Nvidia, get a 430 or better. Hell, might as well move up to the GTS 450 on up and gain DDR5 if youre already spending this much.

When it comes to blu-ray playback, i still prefer a standard blu-ray player or PS3. If you put things in perspective, a blu-ray drive for the pc is atleast $60 on sale, and it's OEM so you get no compatible software.
Want Corel's WinDVD 2010 Pro, Cyberlink's PowerDVD 10 Mark II Ultra 3D, ArcSoft TotalMedia Theater, or AnyDVD HD ? It'll cost you more.

Okay, so after some extensive reading it seems that the suggested way of doing this would be to build a file server on the backend and then a media pc on the frontend. I am trying to re-think the structure of the build...

I have multiple tv's in the house and I would like all media to be accessible across each tv (so this means a htpc at each set?). If I place all media in the backend on a file server it would surely be accessible to all clients over the network. However, there are some points I am not sure of.

1. If I record video/tv, I would want it recorded directly to the file server. Would I then put the tuner card on the file server itself?
2. If the video/tv is recorded on the file server, is it then fully accessible by each independent htpc at their television set over the network?
3. How would that work for live television? Can that be fed to the file server then streamed over the LAN and watched through the htpc at each television set?

I guess we are getting a little more advanced here... HELP!!
