Depends on what software you plan on using. Some software (SageTV and MythTV, I think) can pool together tuners connected to various computers. There are also network-attached tuners such as the HDHomeRun which can be shared among all your computers. Ideally, you would install the tuner on the server.

Again, this depends on the software you plan on using. Windows Media Center (WMC), for example, doesn't support soft-sled (software "extenders") natively. However, you can always share the folder you're recording to so it's accessible by other computers. That's how I do it with my set-up - I just add the shared "Recorded TV" folder on the server to the Recorded TV library on each HTPC. SageTV does this more seamlessly.

SageTV, yeah, very easy. Same goes for MythTV, I think (and probably most 3rd party software). WMC, you can only share the tuner feed to hardware extenders (e.g. Xbox 360, Linksys DMA-2200). With WMC, if you want to get live TV on other HTPC's, you'd need to either install an individual tuner card for each HTPC or get a network-attached tuner such as the HDHomeRun. Needless to say, if you want to watch live TV on all your HTPC's at the same time, you'd still need to have one tuner per TV. The original (white) HDHomeRun and upcoming HDHomeRun Dual both have two tuners. The CableCARD-ready HDHomeRun Prime has three tuners.

Could you elaborate a little more on the number of tuners and the location that they would need to be? It doesn't look like the HDHomeRun is a card, but more of a desktop tuner that could sit anywhere or does it connect somehow to the file server?

1. File Server
2. (2x) HTPC boxes at each tv
3. (?x) HDHomeRun Prime

.... seems like this is just too easy...

Yeah, you could physically install the HDHomeRun anywhere since it just connects to the router/switch. You just need to be able to run an ethernet cable to whatever location you choose. A gigabit network is recommended.

The HDHomeRun Prime has 3 tuners. Assuming you have 2 HTPC's, that would allow both PC's to watch live TV while recording another show in the background. Basically, you just have to figure out how many shows you need to be able to record/watch at the same time.

Caveat, no idea when the HDHomeRun Prime will be released. Also, no on-demand content and if you want access to premium channels (pretty much any channel aside from locals in most locations) you'd need a CableCARD/M-Card rental. One M-Card is good for up to 6 channels, however, I don't know of any device that has 6 tuners (Ceton has 4). Another thing, depending on how a show/channel is flagged (copy-once), it's possible recordings of that show can only be watched on the same PC it was recorded on due to DRM. So far, it seems very few shows/channels are marked as copy-once but that could change any time.

good good info! Okay, I've been hung up on finding a case for a while now... I can't seem to find something inexpensive that will support 12x 3.5" SATA HDD's (obviously for the file server). I would also like something tiny and sleek for the HTPC...

Any suggestions?

Hello guys,

I pulled the trigger on a case and some hot-swap bays to enable enough 3.5" slots in the 5.25" bays for 12x HDDs.

I ended up with a Lian Li PC-P80 and 3x iStarUSA Hot-Swap cages.

Can someone suggest decent 3TB/64MB/SATA3 hard drives to use in this beast?
I also need to know what the suggested RAID level should be... (5, 5+spare, 50, 6, 6+spare, 60)?
