Building a new Rig. [You Design, ill build.]

Thread Starter
Up until now i have been using my rig since 08.... It's time for an overhaul, so I have decided on going from ground up. I have an AMD machine currently with an 8800 GTX, Recently it has been crashing on me maybe once or twice a month. I think its time it went to work on something a little less GPU intensive. (This rig will become a Home Media Server running on Linux.

Time to get down to business. I have Ordered 2 Saphire 5870's 2GB cards Just because they were on a nice deal. $120 off each, I looked around and these still seem like a fairly nice piece of hardware. (Hope this buy wasn't a mistake.)

I'm looking to build this machine to to be one that i can take to a LAN party, unlike my current rig with its setup of water cooling its not going anywhere.

I'm in University no job at the moment, but money isn't too big of a constraint. and i want it to be a fairly power Intel Rig.

Budget: $500 to $1500 (Though its not set in stone, if i absolutely love a build im willing to go higher. Not including the things i already have.)

Point to keep in mind.
- Fairly Portable.
- Intel Based.
- Fits 2 Saphire 5870 GPU's
- And an Asus Xonar D2X - Uses a PCIe 1x slot.
- Transplanting A 2TB WD and 300GB WD Raptor into it as well. (Is SSD really justifiable yet for the price?)

Feel free to be creative. I still havn't decided for or against water cooling so don't count it as an option either.

Lets have some fun with this.

I'd recommend an Sandy Bridge build, I'd put together a list but all the Sandy Bridge CPUs and mobos are out of stock on Newegg. I'd definately go Sandy Bridge once the mobos are back in stock though.

Wait until March/April when the Sandy Bridge chipset is re-released, and grab an i7 2600k along with a P67 mobo, slap an H50/H70 on it, keeps the water cooling without the hassle of a full-blown custom loop, and clock it up to 5GHz. Slap on an SSD as a boot drive and a mechanical 1TB drive for storage (WD Caviar Black, Samsung Spinpoint F3 are both sound choices). Couple it up with 2 x 2gb of RAM (no triple-channel on the P67/H67 chipsets), a quality ~700W-800W PSU (the one in my sig is excellent), and put it all in a mid-tower box easy for moving around (not too knowledgeable about cases, I'll let someone else take care of that).

Do you guys think that this has been a good buy? http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...tent-_-text-_-

2 of these cards for a XFire build... Can't wait to get them but something still bugging me in the back of my head.

Yes it was a good buy, and will perform great.

Just make sure when you pick your Power Supply that you get a good one like a Corsair HX850.

I would also recommend going Sandybridge (2500K seems to suit you)

Well, for a $2 difference you could've gone with 6950's and unlock them to 6970's, which is a MUCH better course of action, instead of investing in previous gen.

5870's have dropped in price drastically for a reason.

Since you like Sapphire, go for 2 of these instead:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-914-_-Product

You should look up benchmarks of 6970's vs 5870's and you'll see clearly that you could've spent your money better, considering it's basically the same price.

Even if you don't unlock them, the 6950's will give you better overall performance.

As for the rest of your rig, definitely wait for SB.

As others have said -- 2 6950s would have been a better choice. 2600k and mid-range P67 board when they're back in stock. If you want to save $100 get 2500k instead.

4GB of 1600MHz RAM is plenty. Don't fall into the trap of 2,000MHz+ RAM being magically more useful.

60GB SSD for boot and 1-2TB for storage. Western Digital Caviar Black, Samsung F3, Seagate Momentus XT or Seagate 7200.12s are good drives.

For a case that's portable -- Storm Scout by CoolerMaster. Nice sturdy handle on the top.

Power supply -- Corsair AX850.

I have already bought the 2 cards, and can't return them unfortunately. And i don't believe they would fit in a Scout case.

Well I'll leave the processor and mobo till the end.

And still a great choice with the GPU's don't listen to everyone else. While it would've been more practical to buy the 6950s nothing can be done now. But you still have amazing cards.
