Help me in building my first PC

Thread Starter
Greetings,
My current computer has served me quite well for the last 3 years, but Ive made the error of buying a packed-in computer instead of building it.

I want it to be an all-rounder PC, I will play good games on it but also edit videos, basic web stuff, programs, etc.

For the games, my current computer manages to play on medium or low the current games like Fallout 3, Mirrors Edge, Just Cause 2, etc. I want to enjoy them in maximum quality (Very High) if possible and be able to play high quality games like Crysis, Bioshock, etc.

My current PC specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium E2200 2.20 Ghz
Mobo: MSI Boston 1.0
Memory: DDR2 3072 Mb
GPU: Radeon HD 4350
PSU: HIPRO HP-D2537F3R 250W ATX12V

I know the basic stuff about hardware, however I'm confused in the compatibility, voltage needed, DDR, and stuff like that.

I would also like to know how to determine the right amount of wattage for a power supply, depending on the other parts that we get.

Also, could someone explain me how multiple core processors affect the performance.

I think about a 400-500$ as a budget, maybe even 600$ if its worth it.

I live in Canada and think about buying the parts at http://www.newegg.ca or www.ncix.com

Please, help me in choosing the best parts for me , even the case. Or tell me if I should just upgrade my current PC. Thank you.

Picture multi-core processors like freeways. A dual-core (two lane freeway) will not handle traffic as well as a quad core (4 lane freeway).

That Pentium is Horrible, Try a Intel Core Duo E6600, Its a way better investment

A 350Watt Power Supply would be Great

Try a used GTX460. I've seen some go for less than $100 at times.

I just don't see games at max quality on a computer at your budget. Save up, and wait it out. I had a budget of 800 when I started my first build and wasn't satisfied until it was well over a thousand. And im still working and adding onto mine.
