IDE HDD Problem

Thread Starter
Alright, so I have a spare 160GB IDE HDD from my old PC that I want to use as a primary HDD on this PC, and I'm sure it works perfectly because I was using it fine on my old HP Pavilion. I just recently put together a budget build with these parts:
AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz
Biostar A780L3G AM3 760G mATX Motherboard
HP OEM Radeon HD3650 512MB PCI-E
3GB DDR3-1066 RAM
350W PSU
etc, you get the point.

But anyways on my motherboard, there are 4 SATA ports and 1 IDE port. Since I have an IDE HDD, I connected the IDE cord that I had laying around into my HD and the Mobo. And then of course I plugged in the PSU 4-pin molex. After that, I turn on the PC and on boot I see the IDE HDD auto detected so I'm sure I connected it correctly. I put in my Windows XP Home Edition CD to install an OS on it and after I format it and everything it goes to a black screen and says "A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart"

Any idea? I've tried everything and I can't get it to work.

I'm guessing you made sure your boot order had the IDE drive at the top?

If you are dead set on using the raid part. Then it should pick it up on the raid screen. If not you can change it off of raid to compatibility or ahci mode. If it still doesn't show try another cable. and don't forget to check the jumper on the drive. As it may have been set up different on the hp pc. More then likely it was set as cable select and they won't work like that unless you move the jumper back to stand alone master jumper.

Raid port? What?

Checked the manual to make sure there is nothing that needs to be set in bios? Some boards use a PCI IDE controller stuck on the board and they can be finicky. Make sure it is enabled. Even you see that drive is detected it may not work right unless the controller is enabled/set properly.

All IDE drives have jumper settings, since you need it to be a primary HDD set the jumper to master.

I got this post and another raid one mixed up. His board is detecting the drive, so it is set up correctly. Seems he may need to do a good format on it or use the software the disk maker has and run a scan on it. Could also be a simple bad ide cable. But make sure to look the jumpers over also on the back of it. How old is this drive you have?

Couple of points:

Are you sure it's your IDE drive that's the problem? Check your install disk first of all, and your optical drive.

Check the cable - you should be using an 80-conductor cable, with the HDD plugged into the black (end) connector, with the blue (other end) connector plugged into the motherboard. The drive should be jumpered 'Cable Select'.

How is your optical drive connected? SATA or IDE also? (if it's another IDE drive, it also should be jumpered 'Cable Select', and attached to the grey (middle) connector.

I just switched the jumper to master. My optical drive is sata. I'm currently formatting it again with the windows xp disc. I'll give y'all the heads up after it finishes formatting. But thanks everybody for helping me out. I'm still a newcomer in the PC building scene.
