I tried the trick with a paper clip and the PSU's fans ran without a problem. This is bad isn't it?

Try another QUALITY PSU to see if that fixes it.

Here's a quote from the JonnyGuru Power Supply Forums. I wouldn't try to run an old 286 with a Cirrus Logic 256K vid card with one of those, let along something modern.

Quote:
Mediocre at best
Reviewed By: on 6/2/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: Does up to about 250W cleanly.

Cons: Blew up after 324.4 watts. Ripple was off the charts, 120mV at some points, which means you fried any SSD's, flash drives, ram, and probably your cpu, too. Canicon primary capacitors, and BH secondary capacitors (if you know anything about electronics you know those aren't the most reputable brands) small heatsinks for supposedly enough silicon to even do the 450w continuous. Group regulation, non-active pfc, virtually no input filtering. UL certification logo, but no UL number, hmmm...was able to identify the OEM as youngyear, though. Also not very reputable.

Sorry, but someone had to say it. Seriously though it's like making a killer gaming rig but only putting in 512MB RAM or something like that. Way unbalanced system.

Actually, more like racing Nascar but going cheap and using the tires off your brother's Civic.

LOL, I am going to look into a better PSU, but it actually wasn't the problem. I took the whole PC apart and removed the motherboard. I turned the mobo upside down and a little gold-colored metal piece fell out. I'm not sure what it was for but it seems to be running fine now.

Thanks to all of you for your help.
