Yes this totally works I have had a friend do it to his cans. This said the build quality of the 595s are definitely superior.

Have you tried a pair of Beyerdynamic DT-770 or can you tell me what do you think of those ? , and how they are compared to the one you just posted ?
The beyerdynamic DT770 are much to 'v-shaped', meaning the mids are recessed quite badly. the HFI-780 is more balanced in this regard and would be a better choice. However the DT770 will be more comfortable.

the HD595 / HD555 will not suit their music tastes well at all. It's bass recessed.

Maybe you could tell us what kind of sound you like. This thread has some really good list to actually describe it. Works really good over at head-fi. Just don't go there because they make you spend way more money than you intended and sort of get you addicted.

basic things that I need from any sort of headphone are:
bassy (not bloated or boomy)
detailed

I'm quite happy with Beyerdynamic DT-990 and Klipsch Image X-10 (IEM type) directly driven out of a Xonar D2/PM. It's like pop them on, load stuff like Prodigy and melt away. They're a bit over your budget but the Beyer 770 that some people mentioned might fit there. Beyer in general is actually more on the bassy end of things than Sennheiser from what I've read and experienced, though I have absolutely no clue if and where to get them in canada

I can't agree with anyone that's posted except chinesewiki. He knows a lot about this stuff and I would second his suggestion. The Ultrasone's are probably your best bet.

I know if you want to save money though, a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50S weren't bad. I'd take those over any of the other suggestions.

They have boomy bass though as opposed to fast pumping bass. So it depends on the style of electronic music you listen to, you know what I mean? If you listen to powerful music, then the M50S will be good, but if you listen to fast pounding bassy music, it won't be as nice.

If you want bass, save yourself the money on the Beats and get some Audio-Technica ATH-WS70 Solid Bass.

I think the aluminum housing looks much better than the cheap plastic on the Dr. Dre.
