Please help, Q6600 OC on Maximus II... Lost

Thread Starter
First off, I've got the Q6600 GO, Asus Maximus II Formula MB, 2 sticks (4GB) of OCZ DDR2 1066 2GB RAM (model: OCZ2P10664GK)... Specs 2.1-2.2v and lat of 5-5-5-18, a Enermax Rev +85 1000w PSU and the Corsair H70 liquid cooling system all in a Thermaltake Kandalf full tower. And I'm running 2 HDs in a RAID0 for 1.16TB total.

Any ways, so... Here's the deal. I've read plenty of posts on this forum (and many others) about OC'ing this combo. And With most of these setups/suggestions, I can't even get this system to POST. About the best I can currently get is 3.5GHz and that's with a CPU Voltage of around 1.58 or so and with many of the other voltages increased significantly... And I still can't get through more than 10 min of Prime95. I honestly am at a loss at this point. And it's not just w/this MB either... I just installed this MB last week after using the BiostarTP45 for almost 2 yrs (similar results on that MB as well). So, perhaps someone can throw a thought or two out and maybe we can go from there... Maybe I'm missing something completely? Perhaps I need to scale the RAM down or maybe I'm missing some critical piece of the pie?

Btw... I've tried going with a x8 multiplier and I "can" get a somewhat stable setup... But I can't with a x9. Also, I've lowered my RAM to 6-6-6-18 as well... Again, any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Well, this is one of the setups I tried using...

-----------------------------------------------------------

Ai Overclock Tuner [Manual]
OC From CPU Level Up [Auto]
Ratio CMOS Setting [9]
FSB Frequency [380-450...No cigar]
CPU Clock Skew [Delay 100ps] or on Auto, no cigar
NB Clock Skew [Normal]
FSB Strap to North Bridge [333]
DRAM Frequency [DDR2-900MHz]

DRAM CLK Skew on Channel A1 [Auto]
DRAM CLK Skew on Channel A2 [Auto]
DRAM CLK Skew on Channel B1 [Auto]
DRAM CLK Skew on Channel B2 [Auto]

DRAM Timing Control [Manual]
CAS# Latency [5]
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay [5]
DRAM RAS# Precharge [5]
DRAM RAS# Activate to Precharge [18]

The rest of memory setting is at auto

DRAM Static Read Control [Disabled]
DRAM Read Training [Disabled]
MEM. OC Charger [Disabled]
Ai Clock Twister [Auto]
Ai Transaction Booster [Auto]

PCIE Frequency [100]

CPU Voltage [1.3625]
CPU PLL Voltage [~1.50]
FSB Termination Voltage [~1,30]
DRAM Voltage [~2,20]
North Bridge Voltage [~1,40]
South Bridge 1.5 Voltage [~1,50,one step above auto]
South Bridge 1.1 Voltage [~1,10, one step above auto]

CPU GTL Reference (0) [Auto]
CPU GTL Reference (1) [-40]
CPU GTL Reference (2) [Auto]
CPU GTL Reference (3) [Auto]
NB GTL Reference [-40]
DDR2 ChA Reference Voltage [Auto]
DDR2 ChB Reference Voltage [Auto]
North Bridge DDR Reference [Auto]

CPU Configuration:

Ratio CMOS Setting [9]
C1E Support [Disabled]
Max CPUID Value Limit [Disabled]
Intel Virtualization Tech [Disabled]
CPU TM Function [Disabled]
Execute Disable Bit [Disabled]

Load-Line Calibration [Enabled, if disabled you may have to raise CPU voltage with 0,04v]
CPU Spread Spectrum [Disabled]
PCIE Spread Spectrum [Disabled]

----------------------------------------------------
For the most part, any attempt made at the above setup almost never results in a post and at the most it makes it to windows but crashes before it ever even loads.

And as I've stated, I've played with these numbers for quite a long time now... I've tuned down my RAM to 6-6-6-18, I've carried a 1:1 ratio, I've up'ed the voltages, used a x8 multiplier instead of x9, I've used 333 on the strap along with 400-200... I've tried simply selecting Auto to must every optional function there is and I've tried enabling/disabling them all just the same.

As of right now, I'm running "somewhat" stable at 3.6GHz, but I'm having to use a x8 multiplier and I am fairly certain that my voltages are far too high for this low of an overclock.

Right now I'm @3.6Ghz
x8
NB Strap = 333
DDR 901 or so
RAM timings = 6-6-6-18
Most everything is disabled with the exception of 1 or 2 functions
CPUV - 1.53
PLL - 1.79
FSBT - 1.51
DRAM - 2.18
NB - 1.6
SB 1.5 auto (tried up to 1.6)
SB 1.1 auto (up to 1.3)

--------------------------

As of right now I feel as if I'm trying to solve a giant Rubik's Cube... And of course, I'm not doing very well at it. heh. Any ways, I'd like to get full use of all 4 cores w/a x9 multiplier at around 3.8 or higher... That's what I'd like, but I'm not sure it's going to happen at this point. I've been at this for quite some time... Even by now, apes at a type writer should be writing some Shakespeare. ANy ways, if you've got pointers, do tell.

Most Q6600 GOs are good to 3.6Ghz above that they can be a real problem to get stable. Sounds like you might have a bad one that just wont quite get to 3.6 seeing as you have tried 2 boards and cant get it there
post #8 of 19
I can't even count how many threads I've read lately of OC problems, all trying to use 4 sticks of RAM. #1: Take OUT 2 sticks of RAM. #2: Set to boot at DDR2 800 or LESS by changing the RAM multiple.

Check the voltage marked on them and set that manually in BIOS, and whether or not they are DDR2 800, drop the multiple so they are booting at or below DDR2 800.

Start at 9x multiple, and 360 FSB. Do a quick check for stability, like 10 mins of OCCT, then bump FSB by 5-6MHz at a time and re-check. When you hit a wall, post back.

PS: Set clock skew back to stock.

Using 4x sticks of ram will just make things more difficult. Your NB will just have added load with more memory.

Try the below and see where you get.. this works for me on MIIF with Q6600
DRAM Static Read Control [Enabled]
DRAM Read Training [Enabled]
MEM. OC Charger [Enabled]
Ai Clock Twister [Enabled]- set to light

Ai Transaction Booster- Manually set to 9

PCIE Frequency [100]

CPU Voltage [1.3625]
CPU PLL Voltage [Auto]
FSB Termination Voltage [~1,4]

DRAM Voltage [~2,20]
North Bridge Voltage [~1,44]
South Bridge 1.5 Voltage [~1,50,one step above auto]
South Bridge 1.1 Voltage [~1,10, one step above auto]

CPU GTL Reference (0) [Auto]
CPU GTL Reference (1) [-40]
CPU GTL Reference (2) [Auto]
CPU GTL Reference (3) [-40]
NB GTL Reference [Auto]

DDR2 ChA Reference Voltage [Auto]
DDR2 ChB Reference Voltage [Auto]
North Bridge DDR Reference [Auto]

Your Static Read is the most important single RAM setting you can make.. and for this FSB you will need to stay with "9"..a lower FSB [closer to 400mhz] you could run PL#8. Quads on this mobo need more FSBv and PLL..just leave PLL on auto, and set FSB like so:

400-450mhz = 1.35-1.4v
450-500mhz+ = 1.4-1.45v

You will need to focus on your GTL's to get your CPU stable 100% too
post #10 of 19
Hi. I have the same mobo as you and i oced my e6600 to 3.8ghz. Leave everything on AUTO and just increase the vcore to 1.55v and the ram reduce it to the lowest frequency but put the voltage to 2.2v. All other settings and voltages put them on auto. Increase the fsb to what you want. This is what i usually do to see if my CPU would run at 3.6ghz or whatever frequency i want. Btw in the bios u might need to set the vcore to 1.59v so that it becomes 1.55v actual. To check what the actual votlage is , in the Bios go to Power>Hardware monitor>Voltage Monitor and there u see the actual voltages
