Silver Arrow or NH-D14 on GA X58A UD3R with G.Skill Ripjaws: Will they Fit?

Thread Starter
I know the whole Thermalright Silver Arrow vs. Noctua NH-D14 argument and comparison has been beat to death and I know that the two trade blows in online reviews and tests done by users of this forum. It's my understanding the stock fans on the Silver Arrow are a little better and quieter, but there's really not much difference performance-wise between the two coolers. I've read most of the posts and I've read lots of online reviews. I'm pretty certain I'll be ordering one or the other next week, so I have a few final questions I can't find answers to and I hope someone here can help.

This will be cooling a lapped Core i7 930 on a Gigabyte GA X58A UD3R with 6 GB of G. Skill Ripjaws memory (F3-12800CL8T to be exact). I know that the NH-D14 should work as you can raise the front fan up and I've seen pictures of similar setups. However, I'm not sure on the Silver Arrow. The Ripjaws heat spreaders aren't the biggest out there, but they're still there. I currently have 1 stick in each channel with the closest stick being in the second slot away from the CPU. Do any of you have my mobo and RAM running with either of these coolers and can you verify that they will fit for me?

I've read that the NH-D14 is pretty flat on the bottom and doesn't need lapping, but that the Silver Arrow has the characteristic Thermalright convex shape and could use a lapping. Can anyone confirm?

I have a fan speed controller I could use for the NH-D14 and of course I could use the motherboard CPU header for the Silver Arrow. In actual use, are both of these pretty much silent at max speed? Is one really better on the ears than the other?

Someone please help push me one way or the other.

Thanks!

Im using a DH14 and it is pretty flat and the fans at full speed are quiet. Noctua fans are not noisy by any means.

As for clearance, you get 44Mm with the D14 without moving the fan.

No idea about the silver Arrow.

I love my D14 but I'm not one to say my cooler is the best out there. The Silver Arrow and D14 trade blows for the top spot, with the Thermalright Archon nipping at their heels when another fan is added.

I know for a fact that the D14 will fit over your RAM as Ehume on here has a picture of the same setup and there was room below the fan, as well as the ability to move the fan up to clear tall RAM.

If you're really worried get a Thermalright Archon with P/P Thermalright TY-140s. It's like a Megahalems on steroids.

Not sure how the Silver Arrow would do with your ram, I own one and it barely fit over my low profile ram. I am almost certain that you would have to remove the heatsink on the ripjaws to get it in there.

Pic attached is of my Silver arrow and ram clearance.

In that case I would take a look into the Thermalright Archon with 2 TY-140s. They're excellent fans and that's an excellent cooler. Since it's a single tower design it should clear your ram with no problem.

Do remember that the Archon in an east-west setup may interfere with certain mobo layouts, where the 1st PCI-e slot is too close for the heatsink. So if your PCI-e slot is very close to the motherboard IO port, it may be a problem.

Man, I'm still a little torn, but I think I'm going to go with the Noctua. I'd have to trim up the heatsinks on my ripjaws with a dremel to use the Silver Arrow. That or buy a crazy loud 38 mm thick fan to go in the middle as a pull fan. It's a shame that the Silver Arrow has the RAM blocking problem. It seems to have more going for it: 8 mm heatpipes vs. 6 mm heatpipes, better PWM fans (IMHO), more cooling fins that are engineered slightly better (IMHO). All that said, I'm almost willing to cut up my RAM heatsinks just to use the Silver Arrow. Has anyone successfully found a way to mount the front fan on a silver arrow high enough to clear RAM with heatsinks?

I dont know for sure how good the silver arrow is. Reviews I have seen suggest its very similar to the D14. I do know the Noctua D14 is great so I dont think you will be disappointed and it does it with silence.
