Well, Cataclysm you can try but i must tell you that the game is only a shodow of what it used to be, for the worse in my opinion, still a good place to start if you want to mmo.
There is also Guild Wars and SWTOR coming out soon.
Rift i took part of the beta but didnt grab me by the throat, found it too similiar to wow and the lore too vague like if it was maked in a rush.
RPGs you should check out Dragon Age Origins and soon out Dragon Age 2, also check out both Mass Effect 1 & 2, these are good games.

WoW - The biggest thing this has going for it is the huge player base. I've played MMO's where I though "Damn, it's quiet here... Do people even play?" and WoW definitely does not give this feeling. Plus, you don't have to be afraid of it closing down in a year or two, because it's just too big of a money cow to do for Blizzard. The big argument against WoW is "You'll lose your life", which if you're able to time manage at all, is just not true. If you don't let it, it won't take your life away. I've played this for 5 years, and quit the summer of '09 because I personally didn't enjoy it anymore.

Eve - Tough as nails. Can be either a big pro or a big con. It's challenging, and in contrast to WoW, you're not bound to play the game like the developers want you to (which in WoW is either raiding or PVP at max level). You can make this game fun in very different ways, depending on what you enjoy. Again, good player base.

If in doubt, demos.

Final Fantasy 11-played it for years until just last year, not as forgiving as many MMOs when it comes to the getting your feet wet for the first time sorta thing. Great community, not even close to the same amount of rude idiots like in WOW.

WoW- good for a starter but nothing more in my opinion. Horrible community of trolls and mean people. I quit once i got my kings-slayer title cause i just couldn't handle the community. On the flip-side it can be very fun playing with friends and people you know.

You will quickly find playing MMOs alone can be quite boring, so dont be scared to be social most MMOs have guilds that will take in the noobs and show them the ropes.

Titles to check out that have not been released yet would be , star wars old republic, Brink, and the secret world.

EDIT:You will quickly find out in MMOs and ESPECIALLY WoW people troll like nobody's business and can sometimes be as bad as a 4chan message board i would imagine.

Obvious RPG's to play, or just flat out best games to play period... Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age.

Then as for MMO's, try out Rift, their open beta is starting the 15th. In my opinion, it's better than WoW, but that's up for you to decide.

I'd really recommend Eve Online. Main reason being is that it's completely different to most MMO's which usually involve mythical creatures with it heavily based grinding up levels for the sake of it.
With Eve you do activities ingame for fun. There's alot of politics involved with everything as well, a game quite heavily based on risk which adds some spice!

Watch this trailer, it gives a little idea of just some of the things that occur ingame.

You can play the 14 day trail on eve's main site, but you can get an extended 21 day trial from buddy invites given from people who actually play the game. Just request it from the forums here, there are tons of people who play it on OCN. I've run out of my invites for the month.

Have fun anyway

LoTR Online. It's free to play and you can enjoy pretty much un-interupted play up to level 35 without buying anything (from personal experience).

Also, the graphics are rather impressive.

MMOs are incredible time sinks, just make sure you make enough time to enjoy other games too I would also suggest WoW or LoTR, both are great. They both have really good tutorials and easy controls. If community is more important to you go LoTR, if combat and animations are more important go with WoW.

I just post in the thread I think you were talking about (quitting WoW after 15 min) here.

Obviously I would recommend WoW. You can get a free 10-day trial anytime for WoW. Download it and try that out. Also, I would recommend you google "rift beta" like has been mentioned and go to their site to sign up and download their open beta client which starts tomorrow. Why not try both for free before deciding anything? (note that rift open beta starts tomorrow and ends next monday last I read)
